HDPE material is tough, rigid and resistant to chemicals and ultraviolet

rays, while remaining lightweight. HDPE has little flexibility. LDPE is

softer and more malleable than HDPE. It stretches well, so it resists
stress fracturing. While LDPE conforms well to surfaces, its lower density
makes it more prone to puncture than HDPE.

Both LDPE and HDPE are readily thermoformed -- or heated to a temperature at

which they are moldable. Manufacturers shape HDPE into products such as
liquid storage tanks, tables and chairs, pipes and engineered lumber. LDPE often

HDPE resists mold, mildew, and rotting, making it the ideal material for
underground piping used to deliver water. Long-lasting and weather-resistant,
HDPE can be sterilized by boiling, making it an ideal material for food and
beverage containers. Additionally, HDPE can withstand most strong mineral acids
and bases and has excellent resistance to naturally occurring chemicals found in
soil. Moreover, the material is virtually impervious to most common chemicals,
water, solvents, acids, detergents, and cleaning fluids.
