WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LOVE SOMEONE?

Love is an emotion. According to Hatfield and Rapson (1993), scientists have

defined love in a variety of ways, including as an emotion and a physiological state.
Loving someone means to be compassionate and caring towards them. When we
love another person, we need to be able to “feel” what they are going through. Love
comes in different forms such as a mother loving her child or the love of a man for
his partner.

These days, we all want a love story like a fairytale, a prince or a princess
with whom we can share our beautiful lives with. In reality, everyone just wants to
love and be loved. However, people lack of sensitivity in expressing feelings when it
comes to love. They presume that they love the other person but are ignorant
towards how those feelings are perceived. The most important thing in love is
communication which portrays the feelings we want to convey such as care, concern
and happiness for another person. In this context, sensitivity is paying attention to
the way we talk with the ones we love. People are unable to connect emotionally
because they fail to assess the other person's sensitivity. There are many ways of
expressing the feelings of love such as concerning his or her well-being, praising for
accomplishments as well as giving gifts. Usually, a person in love would give
something precious of his to others as a token of his love. Nevertheless, giving in
love does not have to be in terms of material possessions. They can be advices,
spending quality time or even genuine praises.

Apart from that, to love someone also means putting aside our ego and taking
account of other’s feelings. Sometimes one would be egoistic to display superiority
or to prove that others are not as equal. Success and wealth are two things that can
drive a person to be egoistic. When we feel superior to others, we begin to expect
more love and obedience from them than we can provide in return. There will be
many occasions in our lives when we disagree with people. Nonetheless, acting
superior out of ego in these situations would only make the people you love feel
offended and small. Instead, we should communicate with others in the style that
they prefer and comprehend.
People thought expressing love to someone through words are more than
enough. The “I Love You” are being said far too often by people around us but only
few of them are genuine. On the whole, loving someone means to have compassion
for the other person. People have to learn to express their feelings not only through
words but from their actions because action speaks louder than words.
