RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS
n Rational expressions
f(x)
Rational expression is an algebraic expression which is of the form where f(x) and g (x) are polynomials
g(x)
and g(x) is not a zero polynomial.
Note :
f(x)
l Every polynomial is a rational expression as f(x) can be written as .
1
f(x)
l g(x)
is not a rational expression if either numerator f(x) or denominator g(x) or both f(x) and g(x) are not
polynomials.
f(x)
Let f(x) and g(x) have integer coefficients and HCF of f(x) and g(x) is 1, then the rational expression is said
g(x)
to be in its lowest terms.
If HCF of f(x) and g(x) is not equal to 1, then by cancelling HCF of f(x) and g(x) from both numerator and
denominator, we can reduce the given rational expression to its lowest term.
Note :
x + 1 3x - 2
Ex. Simplify +
2x - 1 x - 1
Note :
l The process of dividing two rational expressions is similar to the process of dividing two rational numbers.
