Document Scope

The aim of this document is to clarify the correct installation of Brackets when
using IP-10G in Stand alone or Nodal Configuration or when switching IP-10G
between the configurations.

General

There are two types of Brackets for IP-10G:

1. Brackets for standalone unit connected directly from the IP-10G to the
rack, without pulling holes (two are supplied in each IDU box).

2. Brackets for XC backplane – connected to the IP-10G when it’s inserted

into the backplane, with pulling holes (four are supplied in each
backplane box).

Problem Found in the Field

IP-10G used in Stand Alone configuration was installed in Nodal Configuration.

The Brackets used in Stand Alone configuration were not replaced and used in
Nodal configuration,

BER errors were noticed in E1’s arriving from this IP-10G.

Root Cause Analysis of the Problem

The problem occurred due to incorrect brackets connected to the unit.

The brackets used in the field, were for standalone configuration while using
the IP-10G in Nodal Configuration.

If standalone brackets are connected through the backplane by mistake, the

system position is about 1mm away from its planed place and pins might not
be connected well to the backplane.
As a result any interface between the slots might not work or work with errors
(traffic, management etc.)

In this case the brackets should have been replaced with the brackets used for
XC configuration.

Corrective Action - Correct Migration from Standalone

IDU to Nodal Configuration

Ceragon released the FibeAir IP10 Nodal Installation document which explains
exactly how to deal with cases of migration to nodal configurations (Appendix
A).
It contains 8 quick steps, and the important ones, which related to the problem
we encounter, are steps 6 and 7.

If the FibeAir IP-10G IDU is installed in a standard ETSI 19" rack, and you
desire removing and installing it in nodal configuration, you must remove the
two 19 inch brackets mounted on the IP-10G IDU, and Install the two special
19 inch brackets on the IP-10G IDU.

As mentioned before, Ceragon have two types of brackets (Ears) for IP-10G,
which has a size difference in between them. The Nodal brackets are 1mm
thinner:

1. Brackets for standalone unit connected directly from the IP-10G to the
rack, without pulling holes (two are attached in each IDU kit). – See
figure1.

2. Brackets for XC backplane – connected to the IP-10G when it’s inserted

into the backplane, with pulling holes (four are attached in each
backplane kit). – See figure 2.

See below the procedure for correct use of the brackets.

Planned Improvements

1. Issue an ECO for the attachment of the guide in Annex A to the

backplanes boxes (main and extension).

2. Change the Stand Alone brackets development so that if they are used
by mistake with a backplane the unit still functions well.
