MKAE1133/ MEAE1063, GROUP PROJECT

SEMESTER 2, SESSION 2022/2023

Figure 1 shows structural details of a berthing platform in a quay. Table 1 shows the fender performance
provided by the manufacturer. Your group work as structural engineers responsible for the structural safety of
this project. The specification of the platform are as follows:
fck = 30 MPa; fyk = 500 MPa; Gk = 5 kN/m2; Qk = 25 kN/m2

Instructions:
1) Carry out local structural analysis of the extruded platform to fix the fender based on the load cases in
Table 2 using Robot Structural Analysis Professional. Assume characteristic permanent action
(excluding self-weight) of 5 kN/m2 and characteristic variable action of 25 kN/m2 in your analysis.
2) Evaluate whether the structural details in Figure 1 is sufficient for Ultimate Limit State (ULS) in
accordance with EN 1992-1-1. Justify your answer based on Maximum Principal Stress, von Mises
and Tresca criteria.
3) Check whether the structural details in Figure 1 comply to the Serviceability Limit State (SLS) in
accordance with EN 1992-1-1. Crack width shall be limited to 0.3 mm.
4) Discuss whether the calculation in the software you used consider inelastic behaviour of concrete into
account. What would be the implication to the structural analysis if this is considered/ not considered?
