A Prayer Guide

Africa Trip Oct 12-24, 2011

Preface: This is a prayer guide. Use it however you think appropriate as you pray for Shelley throughout the 13 days. Each date is labeled with a morning and evening session. The evening Complines (prayers) are adapted from the Book of Celtic Daily Prayer, copyright 1994. It is suggested to pray these slowly and contemplatively on behalf of Shelley.

Dear God our Father, I bow before you. Hear my cry O LORD. quiet my heart. Holy Spirit, come, spirit within me, arouse.

Pray Gods sweet and loving presence on Shelley and her team as she prepares for her departure out of Washington DC at 11:45am Morning Oct 12

Pray that Shelleys time on the plane may not be a time of physical or mental anxiety, but that she would draw near to God through prayer and rest. Pray Psalm 12:5-6

5 Into the hovels of the poor, Into the dark streets where the homeless groan, God speaks: "I've had enough; I'm on my way To heal the ache in the heart of the wretched." 6-8 God's words are pure words, Pure silver words refined seven times In the fires of his word-kiln, Pure on earth as well as in heaven. God, keep us safe from their lies, From the wicked who stalk us with lies, From the wicked who collect honors For their wonderful lies.

The Message

Pray for unity among the team. May God use Shelley to touch them from Day 1. May she find a source of encouragement in a kindred spirit. May she sense the Lord, and trust in Him completely. Morning Oct 12

Pray Psalm 16 for Shelley 1 Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." 3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. [b]4 The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips. 5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, [c] nor will you let your Holy One [d] see decay. 11 You have made [e] known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Pray that restlessness subsides

Pray that expectations become Spirit directed Pray for physical and spiritual wellness

Reflect on these lyrics

And the problem is this We were bought with a kiss But the cheek still turned Even when it wasnt hit And I dont know What to do with a love like that And I dont know How to be a love like that When all the love in the world Is right here among us And hatred too And so we must choose What our hands will do Where there is pain Let there be grace Where there is suffering Bring serenity For those afraid Help them be brave Where there is misery Bring expectancy And surely we can change Surely we can change Something

And the problem it seems Is with you and me Not the Love who came To repair everything Where there is pain Let us bring grace Where there is suffering Bring serenity For those afraid Let us be brave Where there is misery Let us bring them relief And surely we can change Surely we can change Oh surely we can change Something Oh, the worlds about to change The whole worlds about to change Surely We Can Change --David Crowder Band

In your safe keeping, O Spirit of perfect truth. You three will defend the cause by keeping us, this night, from harm. We call on You, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.

Show the wonder of Your great love to Shelley, You who save by Your right hand those who take refuge in You from their foes.
Keep her as the apple of Your eye; hide her in the shadow of your wings. Lighten her darkness, Lord. Let the light of your presence dispel the shadows of night.

Christ with her sleeping, Christ with her waking, Christ with her watching, each day and each night. Save us, Lord, while we are awake, guard us while we are asleep; that, awake, we may watch with Christ, and asleep, may rest in Your peace.
In the precious name of the Father, and the healing balm of the Spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ, we lay down to rest. The peace of all peace be Shelleys and mine this night, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

End of Evening Oct 14

Psalm 33 1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. 2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. 4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.

Pray these words on behalf of any sick children at another orphanage they are visiting today:
We beseech thee, Master, to be our helper and protector. Save the afflicted among us; have mercy on the lowly; raise up the fallen; appear to the needy; heal the ungodly; restore the wanderers of thy people; feed the hungry; ransom our prisoners; raise up the sick; comfort the faint-hearted. --Clement of Rome (1st Century)

He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Matt 17:20 Even if you havent understood this truth by your experience, pray in faith that it will be done. Pray that others whose faith is stronger than our own will sow the seeds.

Sit in silence for 10 minutes before the Lord. Be still. Stand in the gap and be silent. Morning Oct 16

End Morning Oct 16

Reflect on these song lyrics: What is the measure of a life well lived If all I can offer seems too small to give This is a song for the weaker, the poorer And so-called failures Little is much when God's in it And no one can fathom the plans He holds Little is much when God's in it He changes the world with the seeds we sow Little is much, little is much Who feels tired and under-qualified Who feels deserted, and hung out to dry This is a song for the broken, the beat-up And so-called losers

Thank God for his call on Shelley. Ask that He confirm it anew for her today. Pray that Shelley will learn that on this trip, little is much. She leaves the children of Fiwagoh today and travels back to Nairobi. Ask God to bestow on her the grace to know how to deal with walking away, when she feels so wrong doing it. Pray that the kingdom will be planted like a mustard seed as she visits the slums or markets today, a seed that is smallest of allyet growing into something huge. May the full beauty of Gods harvest be made a reality, even if not in her lifetime.
Evening Oct 16

Consider a Kingdom in the smallest seed Consider that giants fall to stones and slings Consider a child in a manger Consider the story isn't over What can be done with what you still have --Downhere

Thank God for the wonderful plans hes made for us. Pray that Shelley will speak this same truth to others. As St. Francis of Assisi said, If necessary, use words. Evening Oct 16

Evening Compline: Sunday, October 16th The Sacred Three: to save, to shield, to surround the resting place of Shelley this night and every night. Search, O God, and know her heart. Test, and know her thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in her, and lead her in the way everlasting. O Father, O Son, O Holy Spirit, forgive me my sins. O only-begotten Son of the heavenly Father, forgive. O God who is one, who is true, who is first, who is one substance, only mighty in three Person, truly merciful, forgive. O God of life, this night, darken not Shelley to Your light, or to Your gladness. Keep her, Lord, in the arms of Your embrace. Shelter her under Your wings.

Be her light in darkness, her hope in distress, her calm in anxiety. Be her strength in weakness, her comfort in pain, her song in the night.
In peace may she lie down, for it is You, O Lord, You alone who makes her rest secure. May it be on your own Beloved arm, God, that she awakens in peace. May the peace of the Spirit be hers this night, may the peace of the Son be hers this night, may the peace of the Father be hers this night. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Morning Oct 17

End of Morning Oct 17

Pray this passage from Psalm 10 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.

May no fears or worries delay her willing and prompt repose. Into your hands, I commit Shelleys spirit, may she give it to You with all the love of her heart. How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with You. May the cross of Christ be upon Shelley, over the tablet of her heart, and I plead with the Living God of the universemay the Light of Lights come to the darkness from Your place. Christ without sin, Christ of wounds, I place the soul and body of Shelley under Your guarding tonight. Christ of the poor, Christ of tears. May your cross, your piercing, shield her this night. Morning Oct 18

Pray that Shelley comes to better understand how God works in the culture of Uganda. Pray that she would learn much from her experiences at a childrens prison today.

1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise [b] because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings [c] and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

Psalm 133 1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

May your faithful promises be her armour. We are no longer afraid of any terror by night or death arrows that fly by day. The Lord Himself is our Refuge, we make the Most High our refuge. Be her strong rock, a castle to keep her, her fortress and stronghold. How precious to me are Your thoughts O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake I am still with You.

O Lord, give her wisdom. We dare not take a step without You. When she cannot see all of the way forward, help her to trust that You will whisper in her heart or ear calling her back when she might step to the right of left of what You intend for her. When there are snares at her feet, help her find the way through, and continue with rejoicing until the end. Be thou, her vision, O Lord of my heart.

Where there is hatred, let her sow love, Where there is injury, pardon Where there is doubt, faith, Where there is despair, hope, Where there is darkness, light, Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that she may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, not so much to be understood as to understand, not so much to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.. --St. Francis of Assisi

Evening Oct 21

Evening Compline: Friday October 21 Lord, you will keep Shelley safe, and protect her forever. We place our soul and body in your safe keeping tonight, O God. In your safe keeping, O Jesus Christ. Amen.

End Evening Oct 21

Pray Psalm 88 through the voice of those who puzzle over whats happening to them.
1 O Lord, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night. 2 Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry. 3 For my life is full of troubles, and death[b] draws near. 4 I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left. 5 They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care. 6 You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths. 7 Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. 8 You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape. 9 My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O Lord, I lift my hands to you for mercy. 10 Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you?

11 Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?[c] 12 Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness? 13 O Lord, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day. 14 O Lord, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me? 15 I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors. 16 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me. 17 They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely. 18 You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.
