Introduction

The purpose of this Assignment is to improve the skills that we have learnt from Quantity
Surveying Practice subject.

Assignment is completed with all activities in the tasks. It includes details related to what we
have learnt in our lessons.

According to the analysis of these activities, I would like to say this subject is most important
for day to day construction field life for determining the appropriate engineering task &
techniques. Especially this subject is a very essential subject as it gives a huge knowledge
about how to deal with Quantity Surveying side of engineering which frequently engineers
have to deal and furthermore it states how to do the practical task which is very essential for
construction task.

Method statement for Pad Footing Foundation

Site Details
 Contractor: The name and contact details of the contractor.
 Project name and site address: Insert relevant details.
 Site manager: Name, telephone number and email address.

Transfer of information from client/contractor to ground works sub-

contractor
 The site investigation will establish the engineering properties of the ground on which
the structure will be founded and provide details on bearing capacity. This
information will be communicated to the ground works sub-contractor.
 If the site investigation identifies any contamination of the ground from previous
industrial uses, details of this will be given to the ground works sub-contractor.
 Provide utility services drawings showing the location of any buried services.
 Where work has to be undertaken close by or beneath overhead lines, enquires will be
made with the line operator to establish whether the line can be made dead or
diverted. Where lines remain live ensure that plant is selected or modified so that it
cannot reach the lines.

Work activity
Pre-start checks: The pre-start checks must cover the following areas: - availability of plant
and equipment to be used; ground conditions; proximity hazards and welfare facilities.
Ensure the area has been checked for overhead and underground services prior to the
commencement of work.

Description of the contract: Excavation and casting of pad foundations (600mm x 1.5m deep
excavation).

6
Sequence of work for pad foundation:

 It all starts with pegging the site with correct position of foundation
 Operatives are not allowed to enter excavation. The concrete will be poured directly
into the excavation and moved using rakes without the workers having to enter the
excavation.
 The area to be excavated will be clearly marked on the surface using lime.
 Physical barriers will be erected around the excavation where appropriate.
 The groundwork sub-contractor will liaise with the client/contractor to ensure that any
live services on the site have been identified and clearly marked. Where necessary
hand digging measures will be used to expose existing services.
 An 360 ⃘ ⃘ ⃘ deg excavator will be used to dig a 600 mmwide by approximately 1.5 m
deep excavation.
 The material from the excavation will be loaded into a dumper and tipped away from
the working area so it does not apply a surcharge to the side of the excavation.

 Pegging the site with correct position of foundation

 Excavation of earth to required depth and plan dimensions

7
 Reinforced footings are adopted so cast layer of blinding concrete is added. This
offers a level surface to set out reinforcement.

 The formwork is built according to the footing.

 Before the reinforcement is added spacer blocks are placed, this provides enough
concrete cover.

8
 A basket is made with rebars. Rebars are bent and shaped into the form of a basket.
The basket is then laid down.

 Stump reinforcements are then erected. Length of rebar should be extended beyond
stump level and should act as starter bars for the column above.

 Provide additional ties such as form ties to increase the strength of the formwork.

9
 Concreting commences and should not compact the concrete during the process using
a poker machine or any other compacting device.

 Concrete will set and curing needs to perform to avoid excessive water loss during the
hardening period. When optimum strength is attained the formwork can be
dismantled.

Personnel

Foreman: Name of foreman

Bar bender, Mason, Rigger

Banks man, excavator driver and dumper driver: The banks man and driver’s names

Other site operations / third parties: where co-ordination and co-operation with other site
operations / third parties is necessary this must be stated.
