Google Streamlines Google Docs PC Magazine Online. (Jan. 31, 2011): Brief article

Google said Monday that it has updated its Google Docs portion of Google Apps to improve the way that documents are displayed and previewed. The updates will be rolled out to users over the next couple of days, Google said in a blog post authored by Vijay Bangaru, a product manager for Google. The idea behind the revamp is to more easily organize les. "With more les and of a variety of le types in one place, it becomes more difcult to organize and nd what you need quickly," Bangaru wrote. Last August, the company rolled out Priority Inbox for Gmail, which attaches a litle yellow sticky to a message which the algorithm (or the user) tags as high priority. Now, priority sorting will put high-priority les at the top of a user's list, based on a "number of signals," Bangaru wrote. Users can still lter by name or via other metrics. Users can also access a new view, dubbed "Home," that will display the most frequently-accessed content, with the option to either add or subtract documents from this view. To help a user determine if the le is the correct one, Google has also added a preview function for the right-hand pane, so that you can see a preview thumbnail, sharing settings and more at a glance, even view a video. Documents can now be selected via the "Shift" or "CTRL" keys on Windows PCs, or the "Cmd" key on Macs - no more checkboxes, Google said. Finally, Google has added Collections to the mix. "Collections are designed to combine the best features of labels and folders," Bangaru wrote. "A le can live in multiple collections, just like with Gmail labels. Collections can also be stored hierarchically, just like folders on your desktop." Google Apps also received a speed upgrade, Google added.
