    Ovaries are female reproductive organs that produce eggs and hormones. They are oval shaped structures held in place by ligaments and located in the pelvic cavity. Each ovary contains numerous follicles within its tissue that contain immature eggs. During each menstrual cycle, one or more follicles mature and release eggs in a process known as ovulation. If an egg is fertilized by sperm, the lining of the uterus is maintained by progesterone in preparation for potential implantation of an embryo.
