The Types Of Transportation In Logistics

Modes of transposition are the ways, methods, vehicles and machines used to move products from one location
to another location.
The importance of transportation in the logistics process
Basically, if there are no means of transport, there is no logistical. However, if there is no planning, there is no
ef cient transportation. Therefore, one stage complements the other, so that a good performance is guaranteed in
all the activity.

They are demonstrated in the image below as trains, trucks, and airplanes.

Air Transportation

This is the service that moves cargo by using aircraft.

The main characteristics and advantages of air cargo transport are

speed, reliability in terms of cargo security and safety. it has become the
preferred means of transport for the shipment of speci c, high-cost or
urgent goods.

Advantages:

-Speed: it is the fastest for long distances.

-Safety: it has the lowest accident rate.
-Flexibility: up to 100 tonnes.
-Tracking control: traceability.
-Customs simplification: you only have to go through
customs at destination.
fi
Disadvantages:

-High cost: both during transport and in the creation of infrastructure.

-Pollutant: It is the most polluting.

-Limited load: by weight, volume or dimensions.

What can be Transported?

• - General merchandise.

-Perishable goods.

-Pharma goods.

-Dangerous goods.

-Valuable goods.
Types of Air Transport:

• Carry passengers in the cabin and

cargo in the hold.

• Aircraft designed to transport large

goods.

• Transports Goods Only

Rail Transportation

In the following, we will list some of the most

common types of rail transports within this logistics:
Lorries and Tripplers:
they have an open roof and are mostly used for transporting minerals,
coal, etc.

Cargo spinter
They are equipped with several motors to provide a higher quality of
self-propulsion.

Coll Cars
Coil cars, designed for the transport of metal plates

Gondolas
The wagons are closed and roo ess, suitable for the transport of bulk
products in solid form.
fl
Flat cars:
Flat wagons, suitable for the transport of bulky and heavy loads,
generally assisted by sprinter cargo.

Tank cars:
Tank wagons, used for the transport of liquids and gases.
When transporting dangerous goods, they must be properly marked
and visible.

Auto Carriers:
Intended for the transport of cars and trucks, they are available in

In the transport of goods by rail, the most commonly

used INCOTERMS are FCA, CPT, CIP, DAF and DDP, the
latter being one of the most widely used.
Road Transportation

They are mainly linked to light industries in fast load

movements in small merchandises.

It is carried out by land vehicles, with the exception of

those which uses rails.

It is the most important in terms of use both in Spain and in

Europe.

Some Additional Information:

One of the biggest challenges while transporting

goods is to move goods from one point to another
without damaging it and also in a time frame.

There are different trucks that can capacitate

different quantities of goods.

There are, generally, two types: light (3500- kg) and

heavy (3500+ kg).

Inland and uvial transport are two different ways of

this kind of transportation. For move godos from the
same country, like for example Madrid-La Rioja.
fl
Some examples of Road Vehicles:

• Tent semi trailer

• Tent jumbo
• Truck trailer (fast loading and
unloading)
• Refrigerated truck/frigo (with special
storage conditions for perishable
products)
• Isotherm/refrigerator truck (for
aliments in order the ones keep in
good conditions)
• Platform truck/ atbed truck (for big
size loads)
• Tank truck (for liquid transports)
• Timber lorry (for wood transports like
we see in the last image of this page)
fl
Some conclusions

Some advantages are about

economize the cheapness of
this way of transport.
Also speed and agility.

And disadvantages are lower

carrying capacity, traf c
restrictions, accidents and
pollution.

Maritime Transportation

Characteristics of maritime transport

As we have already mentioned, maritime transport is a

very important part of international logistics. This is not a
random fact; it is due, above all, to the attractive
characteristics that de ne it.
Let’s take a look at the main characteristics of maritime
transport:
• Large capacity.
• International transportation. Ocean freight is
capable of transporting large quantities
internationally at a lower cost.
• Versatile transport. Maritime logistics enjoys great
versatility; there are vessels of many different types,
capable of adapting to any type of cargo.
• Competition. Despite some cases, maritime
transport is governed by the principle of free
competition, so there is a wide range of supply.

Thanks to the great versatility of maritime logistics, it is

possible to identify different types of maritime transport .
It is the cargo and its volume that usually de ne the
types of maritime transport that we can nd.
In the following, we will list some of the most common
types of maritime transports within this logistics:
fi
fi
fi
‣ Container ships
They are the most common type of vessel used for the
transport of goods. The organization by means of
containers makes it possible to keep a better control and
a large volume of cargo.
They are large, modern, state-of-the-art vessels, even
designed to offer zero emissions.

‣ General cargo vessel

This is a more basic type of vessel, it does not allow the

use of containers. Its most widespread use is for
the transport of dry cargo. This type of vessel has its
own cranes for loading and unloading goods.

‣ Bulkcarrier

They are also called bulk carriers, as they are used for
the maritime transport of bulk cargo (e.g. minerals,
fertilizers, etc…).
They are a very versatile type of transport, adapting to
different goods and being used for different types of
purposes.
‣ Tanker

This type of Vessel are designed to transport or store

liquids or gases in bulk. Major types of tankship include
the oil tanker, the chemical tanker, and gas carrier. Tankers
also carry commodities such as vegetable oils, molasses
and wine.

‣ Reefer vessel

As its name suggests, it is a vessel with refrigeration

capacity, making it ideal for the transport of perishable
foodstuffs.
Because of the type of cargo they carry, the speed of this
type of vessel is faster than that of other vessels. Another
interesting fact about reefer vessels is that they are usually
white, in order to re ect the sun’s rays as much as
possible and avoid overheating.

‣ Important to know:

Almost 90% of the goods are transported by

sea and this has its merit given the existence
of other types of goods transportation.

Importance of transportation and logistics in the global economy

Transportation and logistics are critical components of the global

economy, facilitating the movement of goods, people, and information
across borders and continents. Despite facing signi cant challenges, the
industry is undergoing a period of rapid innovation, driven by advances in
technology and changes in consumer behavior. By embracing these
innovations, the industry can continue to meet the needs of the global
economy, while reducing its environmental impact and improving the quality
of life for people around the world.
