THE CHANGING EARTH

GRADE -7
NOTEBOOK WORK- TERM 1

Q1. Explain the different types of forces in the form of a concept map.
Q2. Draw a neat and labelled diagram of a volcano.
Q3. Distinguish between the following:
a) Dormant and Extinct volcano
b) Focus and Epicenter

Q4. How do plate tectonics influence the earth’s surface and contribute to the formation of various landforms?
Q5. Read the following paragraph and answer the following questions:
In 1912, Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist, made an attempt to explain the present-day distribution of
continents and oceans. He proposed that millions of years ago all landmasses were joined together into a
supercontinent called the Pangaea. He suggested that the Pangaea broke into continents. This is called
Wegener’s theory of Continental Drift. Wegner’s theory was improved upon by adding the idea of sea floor
spreading. The new concept is called plate tectonics. It says:
i.The earth’s crust consists of plates, known as lithospheric or tectonic plates.
ii. There are six major and 20 minor plates, all of which float independently.
iii. The rate of movement of the plates is extremely slow, about a few millimeters each year.
iv. The energy required to move these plates is produced by the internal heat of the earth.
v. the surface area of the plate is very large in comparison to their thickness.
vi. Tectonic activities such as earthquake and vulcanicity occur along the plate margins.
vii. The plates are continuously moving.
Questions:
1. What do you mean by Pangaea?
2. Who proposed the Theory of Continental Drift?
3. How many major and minor plates are there?
4.How do the tectonic plates move?
5. List the activities associated along the plate boundary.
Do you Know?
The most common standard of measurement for an earthquake is the Richter Scale developed in 1935 by
Charles F. Richter of the California of Technology. The Richter scale is used to rate the magnitude of an
earthquake, the amount of energy it released. This is calculating using information gathered by seismograph.
