ABSTRACT
In this project we study the harmonics present in the system and the harmonics filter which is widely used in
the electrical system and globally. With this project we are aware of the harmonics and their significant effect
on the system in relation to harmonics disturbances caused by non-linear load such as Induction furnace,
Electrical drives, and rectifier circuit. In this project we are doing some of the simplest but not least filtering
that is offered as PASSIVE SHUNT FILTERS also presented with their own design methods. A key element of this
project is learning about the design of the passive shunt type filter for the distribution system. These filters are
very effective in reducing the harmonics and power disturbances caused by linear load. In this project we do a
case study simulation with a Demo model of a passive shunt filter.

I. INTRODUCTION
In recent times the quality of energy in the electric system has become a major challenge for engineers to
maintain a sinusoidal form in the system in the event of a disruption in a type of wave known as Harmonic in
the system. Harmonic is a problem that arises from the use of a load that is not compatible with another type or
in other words we can say that from a solid state object. In the harmonics of the electrical system it seems a
long time ago but major harmonics-related problems have been framed in the last few years. In the distribution
of electrical energy traditional machines such as a rotating machine produce harmonics due to the uneven
distribution of the air gap of the rotating machine this is not uncommon for sinusoidal & current generation in a
rotating machine such as a synchronization machine. If we talk about overcrowding the transformer is the
cause of harmonic generation. Harmonics in a power system is defined as a current or voltage defined as a
whole number of system frequency or basic frequency. Today most of the load produced without the
incandescent bulb light harmonic magnitude varies from loaded. The current emergence of harmonic in the
system will further distort the electrical power of the system that continuously affects the performance of the
system and provide undesirable conditions such as overheating problems, mechanical and electrical discharges
in alternator & movers prime, failure of separation problems, control system and unexpected behavior of
protection and transmission system etc.

II. METHODOLOGY
PASSIVE SHUNT FILTER is the most common form of current harmonic cancellation in the distribution system.
The random harmonic filter is based primarily on refined technology or band pass single technology. As the
name suggests the shunt type filter is connected to the same system and load. The Passive filter provides a very
low impedance path to the network at the tuned frequency to divert all current related to the given frequency.
Due to the idle filter it always has a tendency to supply certain active power to the region so the formation of a
passive shunt filter occurs for two purposes one is for filtering purpose and the other to provide effective
compensation for adjusting the power factor to the desired level. The advantage of the passive shunt type filter
is that it only carries a fraction of the current so that the entire system of power loss is reduced compared to the
series type filter.

III. DESCRIPTION OF THE DEMO SYSTEM
Block diagram without filter-

Fig.-1: Block diagram without filter.

Looking at the modeling of the sanmati industry, we determine that the average load on the Iron to R-rated
power rating is 850w. Drive in Y rating range is 3670w. And the CFL, Incandescent lamp and portable B-level
charger for power measurement are 499.7w.We then connect the energy analyzer to find out the voltages,
current, factor factor, THD (total value of harmonics). From this data we determine the capacitor and inductor
values.

Fig.-2: Block diagram with filter

As passive shunt filter provides lower impedance path to the harmonics current we connect the L-C filter in
shunt between supply and load. And then we check the result on power analyzer. To mitigate the 5th and 7th
harmonics we design two filters and connect it as shown in above figure.
