1. The steady rate of heat loss through a plane slab, which has a surface área of 3 m 2
and is 7cm thick, is 72 W. Determine the thermal conductivity of the slab if the
temperature distribution in the slab is given as

where T is temperature in "C and 2 is the distance measured from one side of the
slab in cm.
Answer: 0.048 W/ m. K

2. The inner and outer surface temperatures of a 20 cm thick brick wall are 30 °C and
-5 °C, respectively. The surface area of the wall is 25 m2. Determine the steady rate
of heat loss through the wall if the thermal conductivity is 0.72 W/ m. K.
Answer: 3150 W

3. A set of cylindrical samples (all 0.03 m in diameter) are put together end to end.
The outside radius of the overall system is heavily insulated. The five cylinders (A,
B, C, D, E) comprising the system have lengths and thermal conductivities as follows
(A: 0.071 m, 238 W/m K; B: 0.04 m, 73 W/m K; C: 0.04 m, 15 W/m K; D: 0.04 m, 1126
W/m K; E: 0.07 m, 395 W/m K). The ends of the system (A and E) are at 0°C and 1OO
°C, respectively. Calculate the temperatures at each interface in the system.

4. A furnace is built with firebrick (0.225 m thick; k of 1.4 W/mK), insulating brick
(0.120 m thick; k of 0.2 W/mK ) , and building brick (0.225 m thick; k of 0.7 W/mK ) .
Inside and outside temperatures are 1200 and 330 K, respectively. Calculate heat loss
per unit area and the temperatura at the interface of the firebrick and insulating
brick.
