Lesson 1

forces
Success criteria
I can describe the different ways that forces can affect objects
I can identify the equipment used to measure forces
I can state the unit used to measure force
I can represent forces in diagrams

Vocabulary
Collision, gravity, mass, speed, balance, inertia, motion, pulley, spring, lever, newton, push, weight,
friction,

Definition
a force is a push pull or twist
forces can accelerate, decelerate, deflect and squish/pull out of shape

measuring
forces are measured in newtons named after 17th century English physicist sir Isaac newton
1 newton is equal to 100 grams

Lesson 2
1st law an object will remain in the state it is in unless a force acts upon the object
2nd law force = mass x acceleration e.g., if you apply the same force to two objects the one with more
mass will travel less far
3rd law every action has an equal and opposite reaction
Lesson 3
Friction
F = µR
R=W

Magnetism
A magnet pulls, or attracts, materials containing:
• iron
• cobalt
• nickel
To make a temporary magnet rub a bar magnet many times in the same direction
To make a permanent magnet you heat or hit a temporary magnet to keep the
domains lined up
Electromagnets are temporary and can be turned off Right hand thumb rule if
current is switched so does magnetic field

Protons = positive
Electrons = negative
Neutrons = neutral
Electrostatic forces
Conductors let electrons flow through them EG metal silver gold steel and sea
water
Insulators don’t let electrons flow through them EG plastic rubber glass oil
diamond and dry wood

Fulcrum
And lever classes
A machine is any device that does work
1st= F
2nd= L
3rd= E
MA = load over effort
