Topic 1: Last month you and your family moved to a new house in another

town. Write to an English-speaking friend to tell him/her about the new

house, neighbors and the area.

Dear John,

I’m very glad when I received your letter. How are you? I’m writing to
you now to tell about my new house in Thanh Hoa city.

Last month, my family moved to a new house. My new house is located

on a small and quiet street in Dien Bien District. It takes about 10 minutes to go
to the city center and half an hour to drive to my hometown.

There are some shopping centers, supermarkets near my house that’s the
reasons why my parents bought this house.

It is a big house was built 5 years ago and painted in blue. There is also a
small garden where we can grow vegetables and flowers. Next to the garden,
there is a small yard where my youth brother and his friends often play after
school.

There are 3 floors and 4 main rooms in my house: a living room, a dining
rooms, two bedrooms. Besides, we have a kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet. The
living room was painted in light green, which make it more spacious. In this
room, we have a tea table, a sofa, a big TV and there are a couple of oil
paintings hang on the wall. Next to the living room is the kitchen which is used
for cooking and enjoying the meals, in the middle of the room is a dinner table
which is made of wood and surround by 6 chairs. The bedroom is really perfect
and ideal because it has a balcony where we can smell the fragrance from the
garden as well as enjoy the sound of the birds in the morning. In the bed room,
there is a small TV, a bed, two mattresses, five pillows, four blankets, a lamp, a
wardrobe, a bookshelf above the desk and some teddy bears on the bed. After
dinner, our family often spend time together talking to each other or watching
our favorite TV program in the living room.
My neighborhood is really friendly, nice and sociable. They have help me
and my family a lot when we came here.

I love my house. When I come back home every weekend after school, I
have a warm feeling of being together with my whole family. Although my
house is quite small, I still like it because it’s very quiet and comfortable.

Well, that’s all for now. Hope to see you soon.

Topic 2: I know I spent much time watching TV. How much

television do you watch? What else do you do to relax?

Dear John,

I’m very happy when I received your letter. How are you? I know you
spend much time watching TV and you’ve just seen a brilliant program about
dolphins on television. I’m writing this letter to tell you about things I do to
relax.

Like you, I also spend a lot of my spare time to watching TV. As you
know,Television is very important for our life so most families have televisions.
It provides us with information and entertainment. After a hard day at school, I
often turn on the TV to watch Music channel, comedy channel or cartoon film
and so on. It not only helps me feel intersested and relax, TV can also helps me
update the news from all over the world in the end of the day. I just stay at
home and know what is happening all over the world. I usually spend 1 or 2
hours a day sitting in front of television.

However, if you watch TV too much, it is bad for health especially for
your eyes. So, I don’t spend too much time watching TV every day. I just want
to watch TV show and News to get information about life, economic, politics,
etc. Another time I like surfing web, reading books, cooking, playing sport,
going shopping or hanging out with my friends at the weekend. It’s much better
than spend all time watching TV. Anyway, TV is a wonderful invention. It is a
cheapest kind of entertainment for everybody.
That’s all for now. I hope to see you soon.

See you,

Topic 3: It was your birthday last week and you went out with some
friends to celebrate. Write to an Englidh-speaking friend and tell him/her:

1. Where you went?

2. Who went with you?

3. What you did there?

4. How you felt?

Dear, Mary

I am very glad to receive your letter. How are you? I am writing to tell
you about my birthday party last week.

I booked a table in a Chinese restaurant for the party. It was a small,

family place, which made the party more welcoming and inviting. The
atmosphere was great and the service was excellent. The guests of my birthday
party were my college friends.

The waiters of the restaurant brought me a cake with candles and sang
Happy Birthday to me, although we did not ask for it. I was given a lot of
beautiful gifts by my friends. During the party, we played some fun games
together such as “Musical Chairs” or “Treasure Hunt”. We sang excitedly
together. After that, all of us took lots of photos to keep those sweet moments.
We said goodbye to the guests when it was late. That was the most wonderful
party I had ever had in my life.

Did you have an amazing birthday party like mine? I will be very glad if
you can share those happy moments with me in the next letter.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Topic 4: Could you give me some advice? I want to travel around
your country for a month. Where should I go? What should I see?

How are you? I hope you are fine. I have received your letter in which
you asking for my advice for your next summer holiday in Vietnam. I am glad
to give you some.

I am very happy to hear that you intend to go to VietNam. You know,

VietNam is a very beautiful country with a variety of landscapes. You can
experience sunny and windy days here. For a month, I think you can travel
throught out my country from the North to the South.

You should first go to Hanoi and spend a few days there sight seeing
around the city. There are many places of interests such as the Sword Lake and
Ngoc Son Temple, the West Lake, the Old Quarter… I can show you round
when you are in Hanoi because now I’m here to study at univetsity.

Then you can spend a few more days in Halong Bay, the world heritage
site. It is very famous with limestone mountains rising from water. There you
can go on a cruise to see the Bay and visit some caves.

In Central Vietnam, Da Nang or Hue may be your good choice. Da Nang

is famous for tourist attraction and Hue is a paradise of traditional food for you
to enjoy.

In the South, you had better visit Ho Chi Minh city for a couple of days
before heading for a beach holiday in Nha Trang. NhaTrang beach is one of our
most beautiful beaches and is known as the most attractive destination in
Vietnam. I am sure you enjoy sunbathing on white sand, swimming in
freshwater and surfing. I think this place is good one for you to relax and enjoy
yourself and get rid of worries as well as stress.

But I think you should book a tour through a travel agent’s to join with
others so that your trip will be much cheaper.
Let me know your decision. I hope to see you in Vietnam as soon as
possible.

Topic 5: We had dinner at a new restaurant yesterday. It was great!

How often do you eat out? What’s yours favorite restaurant like?

How are you? Thank you for your letter. I’m so pleased to hear from you.
You told me that you had dinner in a new restaurant and you found it great. It
sounds so attractive, so can you give me the address in the next letter? And will
be nice if we have time to go there together.

I don’t usually eat out, but somtime I also eat out with my friends. And
we choose TADIFAR restaurant.

- The restaurant located on Lang Ha street. It is relly close to my school.

It is not very big but always busy.

- The atmosphere is very cosy and the design is very elegant. Every table
with a white tablecloth is decorated by a lovely vase and flowers. There are
some beautiful painting hang on the wall and plants are put in every corner.

- Once time you enter the restaurant, you are always welcomed by a
friendly waitress.

- If you are not familiar with the menu, a waiter will kindly recommend
you to try the restaurant’s best dishes. You can enjoy different kinds of food
there, esspecially the seafood such as caviar, octopus, cuttle,... Besides a variety
of food, the restaurant is also farmous for many kinds of drinks, juices,
smoothies and fresh fruit.

- When you went there, you are always well-treated with delicious and
fresh food; soft and great pieces of music and helpful waiters.

- I often go there for dinner with my family or friends at the weekends.

We always get the best service and have a wonderful time there.

I will invite you there when you visit me next time.

Write back to me.

Topic 6: I guess there are many traditional festivals in your country.

What is the most important one? Why do people celebrate this festival?
Write and tell me about it.

Dear Linda,

I have just received your email in which you asked me to tell you about
the most important traditional festival in my country. There are a number of
festivals in VN but the most important one is certainly TET.

We celebrate TET on the first day of Lunar New Year Calendar. It is the
time when family members come home from all parts of the country to have the
family reunion. The holiday often lasts a week.

Before Tet, people often renovate their house by repainting wall and
decorating it with fresh flower, plants. Then, they shop the beautiful flowers,
bonsai, food, drinks, cakes, candies,... for a big party. They also prepare
presents for the elders and new clothes for children as well. In addition, they try
to pay all debts and return all the borrowed things.

During Tet, people visit their relatives, teachers, friends and colleagues.
People wish each other good luck, good health and good success. Tet is the time
for everyone to come back home, meet again friends, relatives and have some
great parties with local traditional dishes after a busy year. They also go to
temples, pagodas to pray the best luck for their families. Children are so happy
because they are given new clothes and they receive lucky money in red
envelops from adults.

TET is important for Vietnamese people because it is time for family

reunion and relaxation after a year of hard work and hope for a better New
Year.
What about the most important holiday in your country? That is all for
now. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Love, A

Topic 7: It is so hot here now! What is the weather like in your

country at the moment? What outdoor activities are you able to do at this
time of year? Tell me about it!

Dear Linda,

How are you? I hope you are fine. In the lastest letter, you told me that
the weather of your country is very hot. So today, I am writing to tell you about
the weather in my country.

My country is a tropical monsoon climate. There are four distinct seasons

in my country: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Basically, summer is the
hottest season of the year. It is summer in my country at the moment so the
temperature is very hight and the atmosphere is really stuffy. Sometimes, it
rains heavily and has strong storms.

At the time of the summer, people in my country usually go to beach for

swimming. There are different activities they can do there such as running, play
chess, fishing and so on.

Besides, both trekking and hiking are extremely popular outdoor

activities at this time in my country.

In addition, there are a number of other activities such as visiting and

harvesting crops in the countryside, celebrating festivals and so on..

At this time of the year, I often go swimming in the poor or play

badminton with Ha, who is my best friends. Sometime, I go to the park for a
walk with my family in the afternoon or go shopping with my friends at the
weekend.
With extreme hot days, I can’t go out so only thing I can do in these days
is writing letter for you and tell you about the terrible weather here.

That is all for now. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
