INTRODUCTION

Brief Background

In the age of streaming platforms and binge-watching, a captivating phenomenon has

emerged, captivating the hearts and minds of teenagers around the globe: Korean dramas,

or "K-dramas" as they are affectionately known. These addictive series have become a

cultural phenomenon, garnering millions of dedicated fans who eagerly immerse themselves

in the captivating world of melodramatic storylines, swoon-worthy romances, and heart-

wrenching emotional journeys.

But what is k-drama? K-drama refers to scripted TV-shows produced in Korea, in

Korean language. The dramas are aired on Korean television, as well as being available

through online platforms. Even though the word “drama” is a part of the name, K-dramas can

be in a lot of different genres, there’s everything from romance and comedy to action and

science fiction, but the most typical is probably romantic dramas. K-dramas usually only

have one season. There are typically 16 one-hour episodes, or 32 thirty-minutes episodes.

K-dramas are a part of “hallyu” (한류), referring to “the Korean wave”, spreading Korean pop

culture across the world. Watching K-dramas is a great way of learning more about the

Korean culture and life as well as catching some typical Korean words and sentences.[1]

And based on our observation, other people think they watch romantic or other

related relationships because they think they could happen in real life. So we prepare to

choose this topic to find out why the relationships of every viewer of these romantics will be

affected. And many viewers enjoyed the "Kilig factor" that every Korean drama provided
3

when it aired on television. especially when it was on GMA and ABS-CBN, teenage fantasies

spread even more.

Based on what most people experience when they watch romantic shows, they are

more interested in imitating what they watch. For example, based on the standards of the

audience, they have an idea of who they will love. That’s why there are many people who

have relationships online, and most of them are not serious about relationships because, for

them, it’s just a game. They think that someone is meant for them like the ones they watch,

and that’s only the reason why you are rejected by the standards of every viewer. We

believe in this romantic drama. When we watch it, we can say or think that there is

something like that in real life. When it comes to emotions, every viewer has different types

of emotions when watching good shows, just like comedy is all fun shows, action is there

when the killings are over, and romance is mixed in with mixed emotions because it's full of

fun. sadness, and so on. Every viewer can be an emotion, so they show influence, especially

to those who like it, so it can be said that it is very lucky because there are good things to

watch because you will have an idea of real life and be aware. what is happening in the area

they belong to because they don't just watch because others show only life but those around

them. And when there is a relationship online, they can also be influenced because they

watch the people who are in a relationship, and this is where they experience what they say

is true love, just like the viewers. Most people know that not everything seen on the internet

can be imitated because all of this can be said to be just a show. There is a chance that

there is truth, but most of it is not because the viewer on the internet is focused on what they

see. For those reading this, there is a chance that they are interested in having relationships

online. That's why we chose this topic, so we can also know how the viewer can handle it

because most of them have reached several hours of viewing, like those we surveyed, who

almost all watch six or more episodes in one day.

Why did we choose this topic? We chose our topic to find out what the effect of

watching K-drama is and to understand the perception of love among teenagers today. It is
4

also noteworthy that many Filipinos, especially the youth of the current generation, have

been affected and inspired by the new trends brought about by the popularity of Korean

drama in the country. That's why we prefer romance to focus because many people can

relate. and many will also wonder what effect this has on teenagers like us.

Objectives of the Study

The study intended to:

1. To find out the frequency and quantity of watching k-drama.

2. To examine how k-drama influence individual’s perception of love.

3. To analyze the emotional responses evoked by k-drama and their alignment with real life
relationship experiences.

Significance of the Study

This study holds great importance as it allows grade 10 students to delve deeper into
their understanding of love. By investigating the influence of K-dramas on their perception
of love, we aim to gain insights into how these popular Korean dramas shape their views
on romantic relationships. The study seeks to explore the impact of K-dramas on the
minds and perspectives of grade 10 students, providing a valuable opportunity to expand
their knowledge and comprehension of love.

K-dramas have captured the attention of young viewers with their captivating
storylines and romantic narratives. Therefore, it becomes crucial to examine how these
dramas influence the perception of love among grade 10 students. Through this research,
we hope to uncover the specific ways in which K-dramas shape their understanding of
love, including their ideals, expectations, and emotional nuances related to romantic
relationships. By connecting the topic of K-dramas to the perception of love among grade
10 students, this study opens doors for a deeper exploration of how media influences
their thoughts and feelings about love.

"Media Consumption: Association with Implicit Theories of Romantic

Relationships" by Kracht, Taylor M. And Powell, Darcey N. (Dec. 20, 2021) According to
the essay, as media has become more widely used over time, its capacity to affect
viewers has also increased. Particularly, romantic media has the power to shape a
person's conception of romance.[2]

According to a 2019 study by V. Hefner, "Does love conquer all? An experiment

testing the association between types of romantic comedy content and reports of
romantic beliefs and life satisfaction." According to the findings of the 358
5

undergraduate participants, idealistic content influenced romantic views more strongly

than actual content did, and it also increased life happiness. Results indicate that
romantic believe endorsement increased under the idealistic and control circumstances.
Regardless of the movie they saw, men and those in romantic relationships had the most
support for their values and life satisfaction. In general, romantic comedies have a
beneficial effect on spectators, but only when the themes are primarily idealistic.[3]

"How Romantic Movies Influence the Way in Which We Perceive Love?" By

Fariyal Asad (SEPTEMBER 24, 2020). There is no denying that love-related lessons from
romantic movies. When we were young or children, we used them as a model for how to
express our love or as a vehicle for flowery language. No matter how hard we try to deny it,
there has undoubtedly been a movie or a certain scene that has made you wish you had a
similar experience because of how flawless everything was. It is common for us to think
about various scenarios and try to act them out in our imaginations with ourselves as the
actors and actresses. Romantic films are enjoyed by many groups of people of all ages, and
for some, it is their preferred genre.[4]

"How Do Movies Influence Love?" A study conducted by researchers from the

University of Michigan investigated (2022). Some people have stronger emotional
connections to movies than to literature or music, and these kinds of connections and
perceptions can change how we think about and experience love in our daily lives. Most of
us undoubtedly think that the way in which love is portrayed in movies is magical and
idealistic.[5]

"Does Watching Romantic Movies Help Your Love Life Flourish?" By Micheal
Ungar (February 4, 2023). People who watch romantic television shows and movies report
more commitment and relationship happiness. Even while we frequently accuse love films of
inflating expectations for relationships, they might actually improve them.[6]

Naidu (2015) based his claim on the findings of "A Quantitative Study on the
Impact of the Korean Dramas among Youth in Chennai". According to the data that was
acquired, the majority of K-drama watchers were between the ages of 13 and 20. The
female audience seemed to watch more K-dramas than the other gender. among the 100
respondents to the survey. The fact that 81% of them have watched K-dramas shows how
well-liked and widespread the genre is with its intended demographic. The various activities
that were depicted in the episodes were easily adopted by many viewers, which changed
their daily routines and behaviors. It suggests that there isn't a limit on who can or cannot
watch Korean dramas.[7]

BODY

Respondents of the Study

For this particular study, the researchers aimed to gather insights from a diverse

group of grade 10 students who are avid viewers of K-dramas. The sample size consisted

of 47 students, carefully selected from various sections within Pagbilao National High

School. The objective of this selection procedure was to ensure a representation of

different perspectives and backgrounds.

The age range of the respondents spanned from 15 to 18 years old, encompassing

the typical age group of grade 10 students. Within this age range, the participants were

evenly distributed, with some being 15 years old, others 16, 17, or 18 years old. The

inclusion of students from different ages was intended to capture a broader range of

experiences and perspectives related to watching K-dramas.

In terms of gender distribution, the sample consisted of 39 female students and 8

male students. While the majority of respondents were female, the inclusion of male

students aimed to ensure a diverse representation and explore potential gender

differences in K-drama consumption and preferences. This gender distribution

acknowledges the fact that K-dramas have gained popularity among viewers of various

genders.

The relationship status of the respondents was also taken into account. Out of the 47

students, 37 reported being single, while 10 indicated that they were in a relationship.

This information could potentially shed light on how relationship status may influence the

viewing habits and preferences of grade 10 students when it comes to K-dramas.

7

By including students from different sections, ages, genders, and relationship

statuses, the researchers aimed to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the

preferences, perceptions, and impacts of K-dramas on grade 10 students at Pagbilao

National High School. The diversity within the sample enhances the generalizability and

applicability of the study's findings to a broader student population.

Sampling Procedure

For the research on how K-Drama affects the perception of love among Grade 10

students, a sampling procedure was implemented. The target population consisted of all

students in grade 10 across the eight sections. The survey was conducted using a room-

by-room approach, visiting each section individually and asking the students if they watch

K-Drama. The responses were recorded by noting down the students who raised their

hands as K-Drama viewers.

After visiting all sections, the respondents were compiled for each section, resulting

in a total of 47 students who indicated they watch K-Drama out of the eight sections in

grade 10. Based on this information, 47 copies of the questionnaire, focusing on the

perception of love influenced by K-Drama, were printed to be distributed to the identified

K-Drama viewers. The completed questionnaires will be analyzed to gain insights into

how K-Drama affects the perception of love among Grade 10 students.

Instrument

In the initial phase of our project, our foremost task involved meticulously outlining

our three primary research aims, carefully considering the specific areas we intended to

investigate. With these aims in mind, we proceeded to formulate a comprehensive

research question that would serve as the focal point of our inquiry. This question was

designed to encapsulate the essence of our aims and guide us towards obtaining

meaningful insights and outcomes.

8

Additionally, in order to effectively address our research question, we diligently

crafted a series of interview questions. These questions were thoughtfully tailored to

cover various aspects and angles related to our research aims, ensuring a thorough

exploration of the subject matter. By employing a diverse range of interview questions, we

aimed to gather comprehensive and well-rounded responses that would enable us to

answer our research question with depth and precision.

Most Korean dramas have their parental guidance age set at 15 years. But, as stated
in an article, the requirement for parental supervision till the age of 15 has become
obsolete because the 20th century generation is accustomed to using technology from a
young age. K-dramas have surpassed expectations and have viewers addicted of all
ages, from roughly 12 years and above, unlike other dramas that have a fixed age of
viewers. (Denise, 2 months ago)[9]

Korean dramas, commonly known as K-Dramas, have garnered an immense and

dedicated following, with a significant portion of their viewership consisting of women. The
genre has managed to carve out a special place in the hearts of female fans worldwide,
captivating them with its unique storytelling and relatable characters. (sejong,03) [10]

love among the grade 10 students involved in the study. The contrasting percentages
highlight the significance of considering both single and in-relationship perspectives to
gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of relationship status on their
perceptions of love.

One of the reasons K-dramas are popular among single viewers is that they provide
a form of entertainment and escapism. People may find solace in watching romantic
storylines, character development, and emotional journeys portrayed in K-dramas. [Grace,

portion of individuals engaging in binge-watching behavior, dedicating extended periods
to consuming multiple episodes consecutively

According to dreamr724 (2017) I'm completely ashamed to admit that on a good day,
I'll watch for 4-5 hours. I'll watch after dinner and all through the night. I can watch almost
ten episodes over those binge weekends. I've even sacrificed two hours of sleep to finish
dramas that, of course, follow a predetermined script.
