CHN-302: Engineering Analysis and Process Modeling

Midterm: Q3

Total Marks: 100 Duration: 25 mins

Instructions:

1. Plagiarism (copying assignment from others or allowing others to copy your

assignment) will be strongly penalized. If two or more copies are found identical, no
marks will be awarded to any of them.
2. Scans/photographs of handwritten assignments should be merged in a single pdf file
and uploaded on MS Teams.
3. Clearly state your assumption if you are making any.

Q3: It is proposed to flash the following feed at specified temperature T = 100 oF, and pressure
P = 1 atm. Feed flow rate =100 moles/hr. By using Rachford-rice flash equation given below
and Newton-Raphson method, compute the enthalpy H which the feed must pose in order for
the flash to occur adiabatically. Use initial guess value of “θ” =1. Do only one iteration, and
use the value after the first iteration for further calculation i.e. assume that system has
converged after one iteration.

𝑓(θ) = (∑ )−1
1 + θ(𝑘𝑖 − 1)

1 1/3 K1= 10-2 T/(3P) h1 = 10000 + 30 T H1 = 17000 +30 T

2 1/3 K2 = 2x10-2 T/P h2 = 8000 + 20 T H2 = 13000 + 20 T

3 1/3 K3 = 7X10-2 T/(2P) h3 = 500 + T H3 = 800 + T

T is in 0F, P is in atm, hi: liquid phase enthalpy of component i, Hi: vapor phase enthalpy of
component i. All the notations used here are same as used in the class lectures. Clearly write
all the steps involved in the calculation. No mark will be awarded for writing only final
answer.
