Teaching Method:
Step 1:
- Students complete exercise 1 individually, matching the vocabulary to the pictures.
- Students compare their answers with a partner.
- Go through the answers, and drill correct pronunciation.
- You may also want to tell students that candy is American English and sweets is British English and that
a jack-o’-lantern is made with a pumpkin.
- You may also want to tell students that graveyard is more commonly used in British English, while
cemetery is used in American English. There is a further difference, in that a graveyard is usually on
church grounds, whereas a cemetery usually stands alone.

Step 2:

- Hand out or display the gap-fill/conversation cards.


- Students complete the questions with the vocabulary given, before comparing with a partner.
- Elicit answers, drill pronunciation of any difficult words ask, and model example answers to the
questions for weaker classes.
- You may also want to tell students that film is more common in British English and movie is more
common in American English.
Step 3:

- Students ask and answer the questions in pairs or small groups.


- Monitor and give correction on grammar/pronunciation where required.
- Encourage them to use lots of new vocabulary.

Step 4:

- Do a feedback session with the class, eliciting some answers for the questions around the room.
- If students are unfamiliar with Halloween, prepare to tell them a little bit about how and where it is
celebrated and about its history.
