Determine the support reactions and the bending moment, shear force and axial

Step 1: Determine the Fixed End Moments (FEM)
Since the frame is loaded at a joint, there will not be any
Fixed End Moments due to the loading. However,
the applied horizontal force will cause the frame to Distribution factors (DF) for Step 3

Member CD
෍ 𝑀𝑐 = 𝑀𝐶𝐷 −76.5 + 𝐻𝐷 × 3 = 53.1 𝐻𝐷 = 43.2 𝑘𝑁

Considering the entire frame

𝑃 = 𝐻𝐴 + 𝐻𝐷 = 86.4 𝑘𝑁

But the actual value of P is 5 kN

Since the calculated moments are directly proportionate to the value of P,

all the actions can be recalculated for the actual value of P, by multiplying
them by a factor of 5/86.4=0.058

Moment Distribution Method: Example 7
Determine the support reactions and the bending moment, shear force and axial
force variation of the given frame

Stage 1: The translation at C is Stage 2: The restraint is removed and

restrained by adding a support the frame is allowed to sway

The frame will be analysed in two stages as seen above

Stage 1: Non-sway analysis
Stage 2: Sway analysis
47
Moment Distribution Method: Example 7
Stage 1

The Moment Distribution calculation for this frame is the same

as Example 5

48
Moment Distribution Method: Example 7
Member AB
෍ 𝑀𝐵 = 𝑀𝐵𝐴 −1.82 − 𝐻𝐴 × 3 = 3.63 𝐻𝐴 = −1.82 𝑘𝑁

Member CD
෍ 𝑀𝑐 = 𝑀𝐶𝐷 −1.82 + 𝐻𝐷 × 3 = 3.63 𝐻𝐷 = 1.82 𝑘𝑁

Considering the entire frame

5 + 𝐻𝐴 − 𝐻𝐷 − 𝑃 = 0 𝑘𝑁 𝑃 = 5 𝑘𝑁

Hence, the restraint force from the support at C is 5 kN

Therefore, the actual horizontal force for the analysis of the frame in Stage 2 is 5 kN
