Unit 2- Transformations and Congruence

Transformations:
1. Translation—slides a figure without turning it
Distance: how far did it move
Direction: up/down; left/right

2. Rotation—turns a figure
Center of Rotation: point figure turns around; stays still
Direction: clockwise/counterclockwise
Distance: # of turns/degrees it rotates

3. Reflection—flips the figure like a mirror image

Line of Reflection: “mirror”; line the figure flips across

- A rigid transformation (translation, rotation, reflection) does not change the shape
or size of the figure.

- Congruent= same size and same shape

o One figure can get to fit exactly over another through a sequence of
transformations

- Parallel lines cut by a transversal:

A E B

C F D
- Alternate Interior Angles—pairs of angles inside the parallel lines and on
opposite sides of the transversal

a b
c d

- 3 Angles in a Triangle always add to 180

o We can place all 3 angles next to each other and they would form a
straight line
