INTRODUCTION

1 John 1:1-3
[1]That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,
which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
[2](For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that
eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
[3]That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have
fellowship/Koinonia/ with us: and truly our fellowship/Koinonia/ is with the Father, and with
his Son Jesus Christ.

The NT Greek word /Koinonia/ used for fellowship is derived from the GK word, /Koinonos/
which is derived from a other Greek word /Koinos/ which means something commonly owned
or contributed.
Pertaining to the fellowship we have with God, what is common between us /Koinos/ is life
which is the life of prayer that we have.

In 1 John 1:1, John was talking about Christ and he used the word 'life' to describe Him because
He's the person we've seen and handled with the same life as the Father.

In 1 John 1:2, we see that the life that Christ shared with God which is now in us is described as
being eternal. In this text, John did not use any other word but Life to describe the person that
was manifested to us because he wanted to show that what we have in common is Life.
One of the exhibition of the fellowship we have with the Father and the Son is prayer.

Number One

John 4:19-20
[19]The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
[20]Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where
men ought to worship.
The Samaritan woman's questions centers on the people who worship(The Jews) and where they
worship but Jesus' response in the succeeding verses addressed three things; the people, place
and person of worship.

John 4:23-24
[23]But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true/Alethinos/ worshippers/Proskunetes/ shall
worship the Father in spirit and in truth/Aletheia/: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
[24]God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth/Aletheia/.
Jesus in his response to her said that the people of worship are True Worshippers, the place of
worship is the Spirit and the person of worship is Father being identified as being in the Spirit.
The most recurring Factor in his answer is the word true/truth. It was used in contrast of the
ignorance he was addressing in John 4:21-22.
The word Aletheia is used 110x in 99vs and is derived from the word /Alethes/ used 25x on
25vs and it means something vivid, something that is not concealed, real.
Another important word used by John in verse 23 is /Alethinos/. It was used comparatively to
show that there have been people who have been doing the act of worship and there are also true
worshippers that are different from those people.
Another key factor is the use of the word truth/Aletheia/ exegetically with 'spirit'. He was
answering the question of the place of worship which He says is the spirit. Also, he used the
word, spirit, to describe God(John 4:24). This implies that the place of worship is in Him.

Philippians 3:3
"For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and
have no confidence in the flesh."
Romans 8:9
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if
any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."
Paul explains that what it means to be in the Spirit is to not be in the flesh.

Romans 8:6-8
[6]For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
[7]Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither
indeed can be.
[8]So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
He's talking about a spiritual state called being in the Spirit. We're in the Spirit because the Son
of God dwells in us(Rom. 4:9).
The Spirit is the truth/Aletheia/, the state we're in when we worship. Thus, the place of worship
is a state and the true worshippers are those who are in that state of being in the spirit.

Ephesians 2:18,21
[18]For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
[21]In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
In the Spirit, there's a collective union of that is the house of God. Hence, our being in the Spirit
is both an individual and a collective reality where we have each have the life of prayer and we
all make up the house of prayer.

John 4:23
"But the hour cometh and now is…"
He's talking about an event, what He was going to do by redemption that He already exhibited
because He was in that fellowship. So when the hour came, redemption, we shared, took part in
that life that He has, we entered into fellowship with Christ and the Father.

There's an act of worship and the state of worship. The fact that there are true
worshippers/Proskunetes/(used 1x in 1vs and it means, an adorer) who'd worship God in truth
shows that there's the reality of the condition, state of worship. The state of worship was being a
believer, our being in the spirit was accomplished in what the Spirit did when we believed.
(Rom. 8:12-15)
Paul teaches that by faith, we've been led out of the flesh by the spirit onto God. In verse 15, we
see that the spirit we've received is the spirit of adoption/Uihothesia/. Hence, what makes us in
the state of worship is the fact that we're Sons of God.

John 4:23
"... When the true worshippers shall worship/Proskuneo/ the Father in spirit and in truth…" This
proves that there's an activity of worship done by people in the state of worship(true
worshippers). The Word Proskuneo was used 65x in 54vs and it means an act of homage,
reverence, submission. So the state of worship is the state of submission, homage, adoration of
sons to the Father, and the act of worship is the act of submission, reverence and homage to the
Father.

Matthew 2:2,8,11
[2]Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and
are come to worship/Proskuneo/ him.
[8]And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and
when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship/Proskuneo/ him
also.
[11]And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother,
and fell down, and worshipped/Proskuneo/ him…
What they were planning to do in verse 2 which they did in verse 11 was to pay homage in
submission to Christ (they fell down and worshipped Him).

Matthew 4:9-10
[9]And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and
worship/Proskuneo/ me.
[10]Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt
worship/Proskuneo/ the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Matthew 8:2
"And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped/Proskuneo/ him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt,
thou canst make me clean."
He paid homage to Christ based on the knowledge he had that He was a teacher of the word and
that He has the power of God.
Notice that worship is done with certain knowledge about the person of worship. For the three
wise meb it was the knowledge that He was a great king.
Other usage of the word Proskuneo in the scriptures:
Luke 24:52
"And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy"

Matt. 14:33, Matt 20:20, Matt 28:9, Mark 5:6, Mark 15:6, Luke 4:7-8, John 9:38, John 12:20,
Acts 7:43, etc.

Gen 22:5-20
Abraham was relating with God on the basis of the sacrifice of His own begotten Son, similar to
the event of the resurrection.

Matthew 15:8-9
[8]This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but
their heart is far from me.
[9]But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
The issue was with their heart, they did not understand in their hearts what they were saying with
their mouth.
The worship of God today starts with God and it is about our submission to Him. It first began
with what Christ did which brought about our being in the Spirit, and the practice and actions of
worship.
Number Two

Hebrews 1:6
"And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels
of God worship him."
Hebrews 11:21
"By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning
upon the top of his staff."
Worship is a part of the faith and also part of our being in Christ.

A major feature of worship is Thanksgiving. The Greek word used for Thanksgiving I'm the
New Testament is /Eucharistia/. It was used 15x in 15 verses
1 Corinthians 14:16
"Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned
say Amen at thy giving of thanks/Eucharistia/, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?"
2 Corinthians 4:15
"For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the
thanksgiving/Eucharistia/ of many redound to the glory of God."
The word Eucharistia is derived from /Eucharistos/ used 1x in 1vs;
Colossians 3:15
"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be
ye thankful."
From /Eucharistos/ is another word /Eucharisteo/ used 41x in 38vs and it means to give thanks
or to be thankful.
Mark 8:6
“And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and
gave thanks/Eucharisteo/”
Mark 14:23
"And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks//Eucharisteo/, he gave it to them: and they
all drank of it."
Luke 22:17
"And he took the cup, and gave thanks/Eucharisteo/, and said, Take this, and divide it among
yourselves"
Acts 27:35
"And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all:
and when he had broken it, he began to eat."
2 Thessalonians 1:3
"We are bound to thank/Eucharisteo/ God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that
your faith groweth exceedingly…"
2 Thessalonians 2:13
"But we are bound to give thanks/Eucharisteo/ always to God for you, brethren beloved of the
Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen…"

Hebrews 13:15
"By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise/Ainesis/ to God continually, that is, the fruit
of our lips giving thanks to his name."
We also find praise as a part of our activities of worship. The Greek word Ainesis was used 1x in
1vs and is derived from /Aineo/, used 9x in 10vs.
Luke 2:13
"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising/Aineo/ God,
and saying”
Luke 24:53
"And were continually in the temple, praising/Aineo/ and blessing God. Amen."
Every time they met they praised God.

Acts 2:46-47
[46]And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to
house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
[47]Praising/Aineo/ God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the
church daily such as should be saved.
Acts 3:8-9
[8]And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and
leaping, and praising/Aineo/ God.
[9]And all the people saw him walking and praising/Aineo/ God:

Revelation 19:5
"And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise/Aineo/ our God, all ye his servants, and ye
that fear him, both small and great."

The content of the life of worship that we have is words of Thanksgiving and praises.

John 15:11
"These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your
joy/Chara/ might be full."
John 16:24
"Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy/Chara/
may be full."
2 Corinthians 1:24
"Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy/Chara/: for by faith
ye stand."
Philippians 1:25
"And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your
furtherance and joy/Chara/ of faith"
1 John 1:4
"And these things write we unto you, that your joy/Chara/ may be full."
Helping believers means helping them to be full of Joy.

2 John 1:12
"Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come
unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy/Chara/ may be full."
1 Peter 1:8
"Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice
with joy/Chara/ unspeakable and full of glory"

Joy is the reality of what we have and also an expression of the same.

Philippians 3:3
"For we are the circumcision, which worship/Latreuo/ God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ
Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."
Latreuo was used 21x in 21vs and it means to serve or to do service. Latreuo is derived
from /Latris/ and it means an hired servant.

Matthew 4:10
"Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship/Latreuo/
the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
Luke 2:37
[37]And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the
temple, but served/Latreuo/ God with fastings and prayers night and day.
Romans 1:9
"For God is my witness, whom I serve/Latreuo/ with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that
without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers"
2 Timothy 1:3
"I thank God, whom I serve/Latreuo/ from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without
ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day"
Hebrews 9:14
"How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself
without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve/Latreuo/ the living God?"

A derivative of /Latreuo/, /Latreia/ was used 5x in 5vs and it means rendering services to God.
Worship is never to entertain oneself.
Romans 9:4
"Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the
giving of the law, and the service/Latreia/ of God, and the promises"
Romans 12:1
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service/Latreia/."
Hebrews 9:1
"Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service/Latreia/, and a worldly
sanctuary."
Hebrews 9:6
"Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle,
accomplishing the service/Latreia/ of God."

John 4:19-25,
In this text we see that true worship is the worship of God in spirit and in truth. Being in spirit is
specific. God is the Spirit.
Romans 8:9,14
[9]But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now
if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
[14]For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Being in the spirit is about sonship. Thus, true worship is the worship of God as sons.
Since worship is a /Latreuo/ done by a /Latris/, we can't decide what we do in the worship of
God. We're to serve Him according to what the spirit dictates and influence us to do.

In the scriptures, we see that on of the things the Spirit influences us to do is to sing with our
mouth.
Matthew 26:30
"And when they had sung an hymn/Humneo/(used 4x in 4vs and it means to sing), they went out
into the mount of Olives."
Acts 16:25
"And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises/Humneo/ unto God: and the prisoners
heard them."
Another word used for singing in the New Testament is /Psallo/. It was used 5x in 4vs and it
means to form melody by twitching or rubbing. It is the use of our mouth to make melody
accompanied by instruments.
Romans 15:9
"And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will
confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing/Psallo/ unto thy name."
James 5:13
"Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms/Psallo/."
Ephesians 5:19
"Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing/Ado/ and making
melody/Psallo/ in your heart to the Lord"
The word /Ado/ was used 5x in 5vs and it means; to sing.
Revelation 5:9
"And they sung/Ado/ a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals
thereof…"
Revelation 14:3
"And they sung/Ado/ as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the
elder…"
Revelation 15:3
"And they sing/Ado/ the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb…"

The spirit also influences our hands during worship.

1 Timothy 2:8
"I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting."
Psalms 134:2
"Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD."
Psalms 141:2
"Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening
sacrifice."
Lamentations 3:41
"Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens."

Number Three

Mark 11:17
"And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house/Oikos/ shall be called of all
nations the house/Oikos/ of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves."

John 14:1-3
Here, He used the /Oikia/ derived from the word /Oikos/, and it means a residence, abode or
family, while /Oikos/ means a dwelling.
The use of /Oikos/ is more general than /Oikia/ which seems to be more personal.

His Father's house, where He dwells is the Church (Eph. 2:19-22, Heb. 12:22-24). Collectively,
we make up the Father's house. At that time in John 14, He was the only one in that reality and
He was going to make the same available to us

John 14:2
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to
prepare a place for you."
He was speaking from His foreknowledge of the Father's house. The house God was going to
dwell in had already been predestined to be a people and Christ was going to make it possible for
us to be there.

John 14:6
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but
by me."
He's the way, and He's going to the Father's house. Thus, we're to come to the Father's house by
becoming part of His body, the Church.
He has made it possible for us to become part of His body via the work of redemption. Hence,
the message of our salvation which is about Christ's death and resurrection is the truth. The spirit
which we'd received at salvation is responsible for that life spoken about in John 14:6 thus,
explaining how Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

John 14:7
"If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him,
and have seen him."
The word that explains what He's talking about in verse 7, is fellowship.
1 John 1:3
"That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with
us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ."

The second implication of what Christ said in John 14:7, is that we're in fellowship, there's
something common, with the Father through Him. What is common in our fellowship between us
is the Spirit and the eternal Life we have.

John 14:11
"Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very
works'/Ergon/ sake."
Seeing and knowing God is in the reality of what we have in fellowship. The fellowship also has
work /Ergon/ that proves our participation in the fellowship and proves that we have the life of
prayer.

John 14:12
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and
greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
The Father which is in Christ is responsible for the work being done, and since we're to do the
work it'd mean that the Father is also in us.

John 14:13-14
[13]And whatsoever ye shall ask/Aiteo/ in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be
glorified in the Son.
[14]If ye shall ask/Aiteo/ any thing in my name, I will do it.

This means that we can ask for things to be done and it'll be done. The Aiteo here is to request
for something to be done. In the life of prayer, we can ask that things be done.

He emphasizes that the spirit coming from our obedience to his commandment and the reality of
it is the spirit which is why we can do the same things and have the same work done.
In Chapter 15, He explains that He's the vine and we're the branches tasked with bearing fruits
and when we bear fruits we'll be pruned that we bear more fruits, but if we fail to bear fruits,
He'll lift us up that we may bear fruits. The chapter is a discussion between Christ and the
Apostles.

John 15:16
"Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring
forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my
name, he may give it you."
We've been chosen by Christ to bear fruits and the fruits we've borne should remain. Whatsoever
we ask, He'll do(Prayer is attached to everything in this bearing fruits).
He goes on to tell them that the world would hate them because of what He's called them to do,
showing that bearing fruit is about doing the work of the ministry and not about living right.
The remaining parts of Chapter 15 centers on doing the work of the ministry and the spirit that'll
be in them(verse 26 and 27).

In chapter 16, He tells that the spirit will come to help the minister in preaching the gospel and
will show them the message.
John 16:23
"And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall
ask/Erotao/ the Father in my name, he will give it you."
The word used for ask here is Erotao derived from Ereo which means to utter or speak, to
interrogate. Asking here is different from the one He used in John 14.

So, in our fellowship with the Father, there'll be an asking to be done, and there's also an
interrogation relative to the ministry.

1 Timothy 2:1
"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be
made for all men"
He's discussing our making desires to God such that when He gets to verse 8, He said He desire
that men pray every time lifting up holy hands.
In the life of prayer, supplication, intercession and Thanksgiving is present.

Ephesians 1:16
[16]Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
Philippians 4:6
[6]Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known unto God.

Recall that Jesus said we'll do the works that He did. Whenever Christ speaks about works in the
Bible, it usually refers to what is known as the miraculous, mostly healing.
John 5:6
"When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto
him, Wilt thou be made whole?"
John 11:42
"And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that
they may believe that thou hast sent me."
Mark 11:22
"And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith/Pistis/ in God."
He just asks to be done, He didn't talk to the Father from verse 20, We'll see that it didn't happen
instantaneously but in the next morning.
There are things that we just ask to be done. There are limits to what we can ask for. We can
only ask for what is within the power of God alone, what can happen in His name.

Number Four

John 14:1-3
In the work of redemption there'll be a preparation of a place for us to be part of the Father's
house and he'll come back to bring us to himself via the message.

John 14:4
"And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know."
The way is a message and what the message gives is life, when He says the way, He's referring
to his work which is going to be the message(the truth) that'll give life. It is about Him.

John 14:7
"If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him,
and have seen him."
He's talking about fellowship, the same life and the same spirit.

John 14:11
"Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works'
sake."
He's saying that the reality of the life of prayer that He examplify can be proven by the works.

John 14:12
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and
greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
He mentions that we can do the same works that proves the life of prayer. When we come into
that life of prayer we'll be able to do the works.

John 14:13
"And whatsoever ye shall ask/Aiteo/ in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified
in the Son. "
It relates to things that are readily available. He used the word Aiteo used 71x in 68vs which
means to require, demand. When Aiteo is used, it means to tell someone to give what is available
either because there's already a product or the raw material to bring the product to reality is
available.

Matthew 5:42
"Give/Didomi/ to him that asketh/Aiteo/ thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not
thou away."
He's asking for something that's readily available.
Matthew 6:8
"Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before
ye ask/Aiteo/ him."

It's about things that are already available, things that just need to be transferred, or things that
should be given as a matter of rights.

When Jesus use it in John 14:12-13 ,it shows that we just make a demand of what is readily
available. It was used by Jesus for the miraculous and for meeting needs.
Healing and meeting natural needs is under a simple Aiteo where all you need to do is demand to
be done and just stand on it.

After John 14:13, He goes on to discuss the reality of being in the Father's house as the spirit.
Following His teaching in John 14, He teaches the reality of being in the Father's house as a
relationship between Himself and the Church where He's the vine and the. church is the branch
with a specific task to bear fruit. When He said fruit, He's referring to ministry.
In John 16, He starts talking about the spirit's role in the message, to help the believer with the
ministry and to teach him the word.
John 16:16-22
He spoke about His death and resurrection briefly.
John 16:23-24
[23]And in that day ye shall ask/Erotao/ me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever
ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
[24]Hitherto have ye asked/Aiteo/nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy
may be full.

John 16:25
"These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more
speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father."
John 16:26
"At that day ye shall ask/Erotao/ in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father
for you:"
The major activity going on here is an Erotao but He also uses Aiteo to show that there is a
demand. He uses Erotao twice, at the beginning and the end, in the discussion of prayer which
span from verse 23-26, and Aiteo was used once.

The word Erotao means to interrogate or to beseech. It is from the word Ereo, a word that
means to utter, to speak. It is supposed to have an affinity with the word Rheo which means to
pour forth. Erotao would mean to express oneself with another.
Matthew 15:23
"But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought/Erotao/ him, saying,
Send her away; for she crieth after us."
When they used the word Erotao,they were trying to convince Him.

Matthew 16:13
"When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked/Erotao/ his disciples, saying,
Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?"
It was an interaction, an engagement.

Mark 4:10
"And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable."
They were asking Him about the parable.

Mark 7:26
"The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought/Erotao/ him that he
would cast forth the devil out of her daughter."
Here, the woman was persuading Him to cast out the demon out of her daughter.

Luke 4:38
"And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother
was taken with a great fever; and they besought/Erotao/ him for her."
They made request concerning her.

It involves asking to be done or asking to give, if it's asking to know, it's not demanding but
seeking to find out.

John 16:30
"Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask/Erotao/
thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God."
John 17:9
"I pray/Erotao/ for them: I pray/Erotao/ not for the world, but for them which thou hast given
me; for they are thine."
This is the same prayer we find in Matthew 26, in praying for His disciples, it's still an Erotao,
He's still asking but the manner which He asks is different.

2 John 1:5
"And now I beseech/Erotao/ thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee,
but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another."
In this case, it's not about what's readily available but about what you put for, how you ask, urge,
require, or how you engage, interact and negotiate or persuade.

Hebrews 5:7
"Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong
crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared"

The word prayer became a word that covers a lot of activities. Proseuchomai, to desire towards.
Proseuche, the desiring towards. The focus here is on the supplication.

Luke 22:41-44
When to it said He prayed and it was an Erotao, it was a kind of Proseuche called supplication
earnestly done with vehement cries and tears.
/Deesis/ was used 19x in 17vs and it was used only three-times in the four gospels and once in
the books of Acts. The word Deesis means petition, to show a need or an entreaty that is made.

Luke 2:37
"And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple,
but served God with fastings and prayers/Deesis/ night and day."
Luke 5:33
"And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers/Deesis/, and
likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?"
Acts 1:14
"These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication/Deesis/, with the women, and
Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren."
Romans 10:1
"Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer/Deesis/ to God for Israel is, that they might be saved."
2 Corinthians 1:11
"Ye also helping together by prayer/Deesis/ for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the
means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf."
It involves pulling resources together. It comes from the background of Erotao (persuading,
enquiry) and it is to make an entreaty, enquiry.
2 Corinthians 9:14
"And by their prayer/Deesis/ for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in
you."
Philippians 1:4
"Always in every prayer/Deesis/ of mine for you all making request with joy"
1 Timothy 5:5
"Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications
and prayers night and day."
It is something that is done continually.

The word Deesis is derived from the word from the word /…/ used 22x in 22vs and it means to
beg, or petition.
Supplication reflects the Erotao prayer the Lord Jesus taught us, and there's an Aiteo prayer
within the Erotao.

The first thing it exposes us to is our mode of prayer.


Ephesians 6:18
"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saints"
Supplication exposes us to the approach, manner and ways of this kind of prayer. All kinds of
prayer should be done in the spirit.
Praying in the spirit is a description of our reality in the spirit.
Romans 8:9
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if
any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."
Philippians 3:3
"For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and
have no confidence in the flesh."
He word prayer is attached to the activities and not the person praying.
Jude 1:20
"But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,"
Praying in the spirit is praying in the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 14:2
"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man
understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."
Praying in tongues is the prayer in the spirit where the spirit speaks.
1 Corinthians 14:15
"What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will
sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."
Praying in the spirit is restricted to tongues.
