Octavio Paz
b. 1914

The Mexican poet and critic Octavio Paz traveUed extensively as a diplomat (he was the Mexican ambassador in New
Delhi in the mid-1960s) and more recently as a professor of literature. Influenced by tMSurrealists, his poems deal
with themes of isolation and sexual union, and in the prose-work Labyrinth of Solitude (1950) he explores notions
of Mexican identity. He was awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize for Literature.
