Research Topic: Lacrosse

By Ahmed Jaan
Research Question

How has the sport of Lacrosse evolved in Canadian culture over the years, and
what cultural factors have influenced its development and popularity?
Research Methods

For this study, I will utilize a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
These approaches will provide a comprehensive understanding of Lacrosse's role in Canadian
culture. To explore its cultural significance and historical context deeply, interviews with
players, coaches, and enthusiasts will offer invaluable insights. Additionally, conducting focus
groups and observing Lacrosse events will allow me to witness how the sport fosters
community and social connections. In contrast, quantitative methods involving surveys and
data analysis on participation rates and demographic trends will provide statistical evidence
about Lacrosse's current state across different regions in Canada. By effectively combining
these research approaches, I can achieve a holistic view of the sport's cultural impact and
trajectory.
Limitations of Research Methods

While qualitative methods provide valuable insights, their reliability may be

compromised by potential biases from interviewees and subjective data inte
rpretation. Furthermore, the small participant size in focus groups and
interviews might not adequately represent the broader Canadian Lacrosse
community. Contrarily, quantitative methods may struggle to capture
complicated details and cultural contexts as effectively as qualitative
approaches. In addition, obtaining comprehensive and up-to-date data on
Lacrosse participation and trends across the vast Canadian landscape poses
its challenges.
Theory or School of Thought

Cultural Materialism, a theoretical framework in anthropology, focuses on the material conditions and
resources that drive cultural change and evolution. Within this approach, I would analyze the influence
of Lacrosse in Canadian culture by exploring its historical roots among Indigenous communities and
their interactions with European settlers. By considering factors such as technology, economy, e
nvironment, availability of resources like playing fields and equipment, sponsorship opportunities, and
socio-economic aspects, we can understand how Lacrosse spread across different regions in Canada.
Moreover, studying how Lacrosse contributed to community identity reveals its significance within
Canadian culture. Through Cultural Materialism's lens, we gain insights into both the historical
foundations and contemporary relevance of Lacrosse as a dynamic sport embedded in Canadian
society. This analytical perspective allows us to uncover deeper cultural meanings and social functions
attributed to this beloved sport.
Personal Interest

As someone whos quite passionate about sports, I've always been intrigued by
the role they play in shaping and reflecting a society's culture. The rich pre sence
of Lacrosse within Canadian culture has particularly caught my attention. It
goes far beyond being just a sport, as it holds immense historical and cultural
significance for Indigenous peoples in Canada. The transformation of
Lacrosse from its Indigenous origins to becoming Canada's official summer
sport showcases the interesting interplay between different cultures.
