1 Introduction
The through-tubing retrievable bridge plug
provides a means of temporarily plugging
off selected sections of a well without
pulling the production tubing.
2 Description
The through-tubing retrievable bridge plug
offers a high expansion inflatable device.
The tool is operated by pressure so it can
be run on wireline or on coiled tubing in
highly deviated holes where tubing
manipulation is difficult. The tool can be
retrieved on either tubing, coiled tubing, or
wireline. A sleeve valve operated by the
retrieving tool equalizes the pressure
across the tool prior to release.
3 Application
Where a minimum restriction is to be
passed and bridge plug set as a
temporary wellbore barrier, the through-
tubing retrievable bridge plug is ideal
solution.

Through-Tubing Retrievable Bridge Plug and Through-Tubing Running Tool
After an inflatable element is set, and assuming there is no change in the temperature of the
inflation fluid, the annular pressure (either above or below) must not be increased over the
For example, if an inflatable element with a differential rating of 4,000 psi is set where the
original annulus pressure is 5,000 psi then the maximum annulus pressure is 9,000 psi
(5,000 psi + 4,000 psi).
After an inflatable element is set, and assuming there is no change in the temperature of the
inflation fluid, the annular pressure must not be decreased from its original pressure by a
inflation pressure. For example, if an element with a differential rating of 3,500 psi is set with
an inflation pressure of 1,500 psi where the original annulus pressure is 4,500 psi, the
maximum amount that the annulus pressure can be reduced is 2,000 psi (3,500 psi 1,500
psi) to an annulus pressure of 2,500 psi.
A more in depth discussion of how draw down and injection pressures affect an inflatable tool
can be found in Field Bulletin EB19-97. If further understanding of inflatable element hydraulics is
desired, it is recommended to setup and model theoretical job scenarios using the
