Through-Tubing Retrievable Bridge Plug and Through-Tubing Running Tool

1 Introduction
The through-tubing retrievable bridge plug
provides a means of temporarily plugging
off selected sections of a well without
pulling the production tubing.

2 Description
The through-tubing retrievable bridge plug
offers a high expansion inflatable device.
The tool is operated by pressure so it can
be run on wireline or on coiled tubing in
highly deviated holes where tubing
manipulation is difficult. The tool can be
retrieved on either tubing, coiled tubing, or
wireline. A sleeve valve operated by the
retrieving tool equalizes the pressure
across the tool prior to release.

3 Application
Where a minimum restriction is to be
passed and bridge plug set as a
temporary wellbore barrier, the through-
tubing retrievable bridge plug is ideal
solution.

Through-Tubing Retrievable Bridge Plug and Through-Tubing Running Tool

4 Features and Benefits

 Inflatable element
 Allows the tool to be run through production tubing and set in casing, then released and
retrieved back through the production tubing.
 Plug configuration
 Permits well workover operations to be performed without pulling the production tubing or
introducing kill fluids.
 Pressure operation
 Allows deployment of tools on coiled tubing as well as threaded tubing or wireline.
 Pressure set and tension release
 Eliminate the need to manipulate the tubing string to operate the tool.
 Ease of use
 Ensures one single trip for equalization and retrieval utilizing threaded pipe, coiled tubing,
braided wireline or slickline.

Through-Tubing Retrievable Bridge Plug and Through-Tubing Running Tool

Explanation of Inflatable Element Differential Ratings

The differential rating of an inflatable tool is frequently mistaken to have the same meaning as
the differential rating for conventional, mechanical tools. Due to the potentially complex
hydraulic considerations for inflatable tools, it is imperative to recognize that the differential
rating of an inflatable element does not only mean the difference in annulus pressures across
the inflatable tool, as it does for mechanical tools but also includes the inflation pressure. With
three separate pressures, it makes sense that we must take all three pressures into account
when determining what will be the worst case differential pressure experienced by the tool.
The actual determination of the worst case differential pressure is quite complicated and is
beyond the scope of this document. However, the following three simple guidelines will help to
ensure that the inflatable element is never run outside of its optimal performance envelope:
 When the inflatable element is set, the poppet traps a fixed volume of compressed fluid
inside of the inflatable element. The absolute pressure inside the element is equal to the sum
of the original annulus pressure plus the specified inflation pressure. So long as the
temperature of the fluid or the volume of the inflation chamber does not change, this
pressure will remain constant. If the temperature of the inflation fluid does change, the
inflation pressure will also change. Generally, for every increase in temperature by one
degree F, the inflation pressure will increase by 50 psi. The opposite is true for decreases in
temperature. Therefore, an increase in temperature must not be permitted which allow the
absolute inflation pressure to exceed the annular pressure (either above or below) by more

 After an inflatable element is set, and assuming there is no change in the temperature of the
inflation fluid, the annular pressure (either above or below) must not be increased over the

For example, if an inflatable element with a differential rating of 4,000 psi is set where the
original annulus pressure is 5,000 psi then the maximum annulus pressure is 9,000 psi
(5,000 psi + 4,000 psi).
 After an inflatable element is set, and assuming there is no change in the temperature of the
inflation fluid, the annular pressure must not be decreased from its original pressure by a

inflation pressure. For example, if an element with a differential rating of 3,500 psi is set with
an inflation pressure of 1,500 psi where the original annulus pressure is 4,500 psi, the
maximum amount that the annulus pressure can be reduced is 2,000 psi (3,500 psi 1,500
psi) to an annulus pressure of 2,500 psi.
A more in depth discussion of how draw down and injection pressures affect an inflatable tool
can be found in Field Bulletin EB19-97. If further understanding of inflatable element hydraulics is
desired, it is recommended to setup and model theoretical job scenarios using the

*Hydraulic imbalance during setting: When the 1.69-in. OD retrievable bridge plug is being set, the tool has an
unbalanced area that is acting on the pull release shear screws. If the pull release is set too low the tool will release
during the setting operation. This area is 1.107 in.2. Therefore, the pull release must be set to a value higher than the
pressure being applied to set the tool.
The snap force required to shift the equalizing collet is 200 lb.
