1) Calculate the empirical formulae of the following compounds from the information given.
a) 1.12g of iron combines with oxygen to form 1.60g of an oxide of iron. [Fe = 56, O= 16]
FE1.12/56=0.02 mol O 1.60/16= 0.1 mol
0.02/0.02 = 1 0.1/0.02= 5 Ans= FeO5
b)23.8g of tin combines with chlorine to form 38.0g of a chloride of tin. [Sn= 119, Cl= 35.5]
Sn 23.8g/119= 0.2 mol Cl 38.0/35.5=1.07 mol
0.2/0.2=1 1.07/0.2=5 Ans= SnCl5
c)5.8g of aluminium combines with 22.9g of chlorine. [Al= 27, Cl= 35.5]
Al 5.8g/27= 0.2 mol Cl 22.9g/35.5=0.6 mol
0.2/0.2=1 0.6/0.2=3 Ans=AlCl3
d) A compound was found to contain 43.4% sodium, 11.3% carbon and 45.3% oxygen by mass.
[Na= 23, C=12, O=16]

Na 43.4g/23= 1.8 mol C 11.3g/12= 0.9 mol O 45.3g/16=2.8 mol

1.8/0.9=2 0.9/0.9=1 2.8/0.9=3 Ans= Na2CO3

e) A compound contains 82.75% by mass of carbon and 17.25% by mass of hydrogen.


[C= 12 H=1]

C 82.75g/12= 6.8 mol H 17.25/1=17.25mol

6.8/6.8= 1 17.25/6.8= 2.5 or 3 Ans =CH3

2) Deduce the molecular formula of the compound determined in Question 1(e) above, given that
its molar mass is 58 g mol-1.

Formula Units = 58 gmol-1/15 gmol-1 = 4

Molecular= 4*1 = 4 carbons 4*3= 12 Hydrogens Ans= C4H12


3) Calculate the empirical formula of the following compounds from the percentages by mass
given:

a) C= 66.67%, H=11.11%, O=22.22% [C=12, H=1, O=16]

C 66.67g/12 = 6mol H 11.11g/1=11.11mol O 22.22g/16= 1.3mol

6/1.3= 4.6 or 5 11.11/1.3= 8.5 or 9 1.3/1.3= 1 Ans= C5H9O

b) C= 40.4%, H=7.9%, N=15.7%, O=36.O% [C= 12, H=1, N= 14, O= 16]

C40.4g/12= 3.3mol H7.9g/1=7.9mol N 15.7/14= 1.1mol O 36.Og= 2.25mol

3.3/1.1= 3 7.9/1.1= 7 1.1/1.1= 1 2.25/ 1.1=2

Ans= C3H7NO2

c)85.25% BaCl2, 14.75% water of crystallization [Ba = 137, Cl=35.5, H=1, O=16]

Ba 85.25g/137=0.6 mol 0.6/0.6=1

Cl85.25g/35.5=2.4 mol 2.4/0.6=4

H14.75/1=14.75 mol 14.75/0.6=24

O 14.75/16=0.9mol 0.9/0.6=2 Ans= BaCl4H24O2

d) Be= 12.9%, C= 17.3%, O=69.8% [Be= 9, C=12, O=16]

Be 12.9g/9= 1.4 mol C 17.3g/12= 1.4 mol O 69.8g/16= 4.3 mol

1.4/1.4= 1 1.4/1.4=1 4.3/1.4= 3 Ans= BeCO3

4) Deduce the molecular formula of each compound given the empirical formula and the molar
mass of the compound in g mol-1.

a) C2H2O (molar mass= 42 g mol-1) = C6H6O3

b) CH2O (molar mass= 120 g mol-1)


Formula Units 120 g mol-1 / 30 g mol-1= 4

Molecular4*1 carbon= 4 carbons

4*2 hydrogens= 8 hydrogens

4*1 oxygens= 4 oxygens Ans= C4H8O4
