SBA PROJECT TITLE

Do juice brands give the correct volume of liquid as printed on the carton?

3
INTRODUCTION

The researcher has chosen to undertake this topic for their area of study because it has been observed by

consumers that over the years the contents inside these beverages has been slowly declining. The main

objective of this research is to investigate if the volume of liquid printed on the packaging of the product

is an accurate depiction of what is present.

Supporting objectives:

1) A measuring cup will be used to measure the volume of juice in each container

2) The values obtained will then be calculated to find the difference

3) The volume from imperial cups will be converted to ml

4
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

To gather the data needed to carry out the study the researcher decided on using an investigate research

specifically a data collection sheet. A data collection sheet is a systematic tool for collecting and analyzing

data in research. The data collection sheet will be used to collect the given volume, the actual volume and the

mass of 5 juice brands namely: Swizzle, Ocean Spray, Supligen, Pepsi and Capri-Sun. The mass will be

determined using a scale after which the measurements in lbs. will be converted to the standard unit of mas (kg).

ANALYSIS OF DATA
Calculations:

Formula:

cups= ml/237

ml= cups x 237

Cool Fruit (Cherry Ice)

Product Volume: 200ml

Volume after Measurement: 1 cup

237 x 1 cup = 237ml Difference in Volume= + 37ml

Ocean Spray (Cranberry Classic)

Product Volume: 450ml

Volume after Measurement: 2 cups

237 x 2 cups = 474ml Difference in Volume= + 24ml

Supligen

Product Volume: 250ml

Volume after Measurement: 1 cup

237 x 1 = 237ml Difference in Volume= -13ml

7
Capri-Sun

Product Volume: 200ml

Volume after Measurement: 1 cup

237 x 1 = 237ml Difference in Volume= + 37ml

Pepsi

Product Volume: 591 ml

Volume after Measurement: 2 5/6 cups Difference in Volume= +80.5 ml

237 x 2 = 474 ml 237 x ½ = 118.5ml 237 x 1/3= 79 Total= 474 + 118.5 + 79= 671.5ml

8
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

The data collected from the experiment revealed that of the five juice brands that were measured and

investigated the brand with the closest and most accurate concentrations of liquid printed on the carton

was Ocean Spray with a volume of 450 ml and its actual volume being 474ml. The brand with the least

amount of liquid in the carton was Supligen with a volume of 250 ml and its actual volume after

measurement is 237 ml. For the remaining juice companies the projected volumes and the volumes after

measurement were quite generous ranging from 37 – 24ml of added liquid with the exception of Pepsi at

80.5 ml which is generally 1/3 a cup more.

9
CONCLUSION
After conducting this investigation, the calculated outcome conflicted with my projected results, and it

has proven that most juice companies do take into consideration the amount of liquid that they print on

the carton and how much of a necessity it is for their consumers.
