Collaborate with stakeholders for greener ports

• Collaboration with shipping sectors

IMO MEPC adopted resolution MEPC.323(74) on Invitation to Member States to
encourage voluntary cooperation between the port and shipping sectors to
contribute to reducing GHG emissions from ships.
Ports’ role is to facilitate better cooperation between the IMO and national and
regional authorities in promoting green shipping
Ports can take regulatory, technical, operational and economic actions e.g. the
provision of :
 onshore power supply (preferably from renewable sources);
 safe and efficient bunkering of alternative low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels;
 incentives promoting sustainable low-carbon and zero-carbon shipping; and
 support for the optimization of port calls including facilitation of just-in-time arrival of ships.

Energy strategies

Ports are making efforts to reduce GHG emissions through energy transition and
efficiency
• Energy transition, such as using
 Renewable energy
 Hydrogen
 Shore side power: to reduce emission from ships (the average oceangoing ship emits
approximately 18 tons of CO2 during a visit to port)
• CO2 neutral: capture CO2 and reuse (future goal) (circular economy)
