ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS 10 x 5 = 50
1) Let the present age of Kumaran be x years.
Two years ago, his age = (x - 2) years
Four years from now, his age =(x + 4) years.
Given, (x − 2)(x + 4) = 1 + 2x
x2 + 2x − 8 = 1 + 2x gives (x − 3)(x + 3)= 0 then, x = ±3
Therefore, x = 3 (Rejecting −3 as age cannot be negative)
Kumaran’s present age is 3 years.
2)

Let the height of the wall AB = x feet

As per the given data BC = (x – 7) feet
In the right triangle ABC, AC =17 ft, BC = (x – 7) feet
By Pythagoras theorem, AC2 = AB2 + BC2
(17)2 = x2+ (x − 7)2; 289 = x2 + x2 − 14x + 49
x2 − 7x − 120 = 0 hence, (x − 15)(x + 8) = 0 then, x = 15 (or) −8
Therefore, height of the wall AB = 15 ft (Rejecting −8 as height cannot be negative)
3) As given there are x2 swans.
As per the given data x2 - 10x - 2 2
1

8
x = 6 we get, 7x - 80x - 48 = 0
80±√6400−4(7)(−48) 80±88
x= 14
=
14
4
Therefore, x = 12, −
7
4
Here x = −
7
is not possible as the number of swans cannot be negative.
Hence, x = 12. Therefore total number of swans is x2 = 144.
4) Let the average speed of passenger train be x km/hr.
Then the average speed of express train will be (x + 20) km/hr
240
Time taken by the passenger train to cover distance of 240 km = x
hr
240
Time taken by express train to cover distance of 240 km = x+20
hr
240 240
Given, x
= x+20
+1
∣ ∣
= 1 we get, 4800 = (x2 + 20x)
1 1 x+20−x
240 ∣
∣ −
x+20

∣ = 1 gives, 240
∣ ∣
x x(x+20)

x2 + 20x - 4800 = 0 gives,(x + 80)(x - 60) = 0 we get, x = –80 or 60.

Therefore x = 60 (Rejecting -80 as speed cannot be negative)
Average speed of the passenger train is 60 km/hr
Average speed of the express train is 80 km/hr.
5) Area of ABCD = 16 x 12m2
= 192 m2
Area of A'B'C'D'=(12+2w)(16+2w)
192 + 32w + 24w + 4w2 = 285

2w(2w+31)-3(2w+31) = 0
(2w-3)(2w+31) = 0
−31
w = 3.5 or 2
= −15.5.

w = -15.5 cannot possible

3
∴w= 2
= 1.5m
(w cannot be (-ve))
The width of the pathway = 1.5m.
6) Let x km/hr be the constant speed of the bus.
90
The time taken to cover 90 km = x
hrs.
90
=
x+15
hrs
1
It is given that the time to cover 90 km is reduced by 2
hrs
90 90 1
⇒ − =
x x+15 5

x2+ 15x = 2700

x2+ 15x - 2700 = 0

as the roots are real and equal
The speed of the bus cannot be -ve value.
∴ The original speed of the bus is 45 km/hr.
7) PQ = 20 m
PX - XQ = 4 m ...(1)

Squaring both sides,

PX2 + XQ2 - 2PX . QX = 16 (∵“ PQ2-2P x QX = 16
400-16 = 2PX x QX
384 = 2PX· QX
2 2 2
∴ (P X + QX) = P X + QX +2P X. QX

= 400 + 2 x 192
= 784 = 282.
∴ PX + QX = 28
From(1) & (2)2 PX = 32 ⇒ PX = 16 m
QX = 12 m
∴ The distance from the two gates to the pole PX and QX is 12m, 16m”
8) Let the person stand at a distance 'd' from 2nd gallery having 9 singers.

Given that ratio of sound intensity is equal to the square of the ratio of their corresponding
distance.
2
9 d
∴ =
4 2
(70−d)

2 2
4d = 9(70 − d)
2 2 2
4d = 9(70 − 140d + d )
2 2 2
4d = 9 × 70 − 9 × 140d + 9d
2 2
∴ 5d − 9 × 140d + 9 × 70 = 0
2
5d = 1260d + 44100 = 0
2
d − 252d + 8820 = 0

=120 or 42
∴ The person stand at a distance if 42 m from second gallery.
9)

Area of the flower bed = a2

Area of the gravel path = 100 - a2
Area of total garden = 100
given cost of flower bed + gravelling = Rs.364
3a2 + 4 (100 - a2) = Rs.364
3a2 + 400 - 4a2 = 364
∴ a2 = 400-364
= 36 ⇒ a = 6
10−6 4
∴ width of gravel path =
2
=
2
= 2cm

10) AB + BC + CA = 56 cm
AC = 25 cm
AB + BC = 56 - 25 = 31
AB2 + BC2 = AC2
(AB_BC)2-2AB.BC = AC2
312-2AB· BC = 252
-2AB.BC = 625 - 961
-2AB.BC = -336
AB.BC = 168
∴ quadratic equation is
x2-31x+168 = 0
∵ α + β = 31

αβ = 168

∴ The length of the smallest side is 7cm.
