CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the Introduction, Statement of The Problem, Theoretical

Framework, Conceptual Framework, Assumption of The Study, Significance of The

Study, Scope and Limitation of The Study & Definition of Terms.

Introduction

Nowadays, the world is in the era of social media revolution, the age of

smartphones and smart devices applications. People use phone devices not only for

communications with others, but for a variety of other purposes, as well. Actually, with

the advent of smartphones and new smart devices, the use of these mobile

communication devices has become an integral part of our daily life. Today, people from

all ages have the ability to use smart devices applications, including Young students

anytime anywhere as a collaborative tool for educational purposes.

Statement of The Problem

The researchers aims to scrutinized and utilize of using Telegram as a

collaborative educational tools for learning amongst ICT Students of ACLC Antipolo.

Specificalaly, it aims to answer the following:

1. Profile of the Respondent in terms of:

1.1 Name (Optional)

1.2 Grade Level

3

1.3 Age

1.4 The diversity of the respondent in using digital education

1.5 Adaptability of respondent

2. Uses and Engagement of Telegram as a collaborative educational tool amongst

ICT Students in ACLC Antipolo in terms of:

2.1 Engagement

2.2 Collaboration Capabilities

2.3 Information Retention

2.4 Accessibility

Theoretical Framework

This correlational study aims to show how Telegram correlates to students inside

ACLC as a means of becoming a tool used to share important files and materials to

students.

The theory Constructivism applies to this study because this involves the

participants learning journey based on their engagement on activities, critical thinking

and collaboration. With technology present, this supports constructivist learning by

providing resources, accessible interaction with collaborative online platforms, which is

Telegram in this case, that enable learners to actively construct their knowledge. (Piaget,

J. (1976))

Another theory that is related to the topic of accessibility is the Accessibility

Theory. The theory suggests that one ensures an application software is available to and
4

usable by the widest possible audience. This requires that all users can perceive and

understand what is on the screen and operate the control. (Joseph Waither (1992))

Constructivism Theory also applies to this study because of the experience of

the students on gathering information, acquiring knowledge, and learning with the

technology such as social media, digital communication, etc. Learning things can be done

digitally now. Not only that, people connect with each other to construct knowledge

digitally. (Siemens, G. (2004))

Assumption of The Study

The research initiatives are based on assumptions. It is believed that ACLC

Antipolo ICT students use Telegram as an additional teaching tool for group learning.

This assumption is based on the concept that modern students frequently use digital

platforms for educational objectives, such as communication and resource sharing.

Scope and Limitation of The Study

The study focuses on ACLC Antipolo ICT (Information and Communication

Technology) students who are actively engaged in ICT-related courses during the

academic year 2023 - 2024. The scope is purposefully limited, focusing on this specific

student demographic to ensure relevancy and context specificity. This study’s goal is to

look into the extent to which these students use Telegram for collaborative learning,

taking into account characteristics like frequency, duration, and the Telegram capabilities

use for educational collaboration. In terms of gathering information, Surveys and

5

Questionnaires will be distributed to ACLC ICT Students within the school grounds. The

surveys and questionnaires will choose sections with ICT students that uses Telegram.

Significance of The Study

The efficacy of such tools in improving academic achievement, engagement,

information retention, and collaboration capabilities. The potential of messaging apps and

their impact on different student demographics and educational situations. Bringing

valuable insights into the use of Telegram as a collaborative educational tool and its

impact on ICT students’ learning experiences and outcomes.
