THEME OVERVIEW -
Emergency Medicine: When Seconds Count...
You are travelling in a train when a woman in your compartment collapses in front of you.

You are the doctor on duty, when a child screaming in pain is brought in the ER past midnight.

What do you do ?

The impulsive response aided by correct knowledge, that should make you rush to the
unresponsive child or the lady in the train is what emergency medicine is all about.

Life and death situa ons like these are a common occurrence in the emergency room. One cannot
stress enough on the importance of a na on's healthcare inclusive of efficient healthcare services.
While an ER team cons tutes a variable number of doctors, nurses and technical staff, one common
thing is how they work together, making quick decisions in seconds, making the seconds count and
saving lives.

According to the Interna onal Federa on for Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medicine is a
medical speciality based on the knowledge and skills required for the preven on, diagnosis and
management of acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affec ng pa ents of all age groups,
with a full spectrum of undifferen ated physical and behavioural disorders. It further encompasses
an understanding of the development of pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency medical systems
and the skills necessary for these services. A rela vely newer aspect of healthcare, emergency
medicine has proven to be a necessity today. It has tremendously changed the way emergency
situa ons are being handled. Establishment of this specialty began in the late 1960s to early 1970s
and it has, since then, blossomed into a full fledged area of exper se.

By choosing this very important aspect of Medicine, we hope to delve into the importance and need
for emergency medicine in all hospitals, the advancements and protocols in the field of emergency
treatments and to learn from the present system at different hospitals. Through our workshops, we
plan to teach every par cipant, basic skills in some of the many fields that make up emergency care.
We hope to make the par cipants think and partake in a healthy discussion on the future of
emergency medicine and its various aspects dealing with pa ent care.
While emergency medicine is a separate specialisa on of medicine, the basics of managing acute,
life threatening illnesses and injuries is something every young medico must aspire to learn. As a
medical student, have you ever wondered what it would be like to specialise in emergency
medicine? If the answer is a resounding yes, it's going to be a life me experience for you. If no, we
welcome you for a conference that will change the way you think about emergency medicine.
