What is a spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet is a two-dimensional grid of rows and columns

in which data entries can be made.
The data entries can be numbers, text, time, etc.
A spreadsheet is also known as worksheet.

Types of spreadsheet

Manual spreadsheet - A ledger book with many sheets of

papers containing grids of rows and columns is a manual
spreadsheet. Here, data is entered manually using a pen or
pencil.
Electronic spreadsheet - It is a computer application which is
the electronic version of a manual spreadsheet. It can be
used to automatically perform numerical calculations using
in-built formulae called functions. Examples of electronic
spreadsheet are Microsoft Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice Calc.

Advantages of electronic spreadsheet over manual
spreadsheet

Electronic spreadsheets are larger for data entry and editing

compared to manual worksheets.
Data entry and operations are quicker in electronic
spreadsheets.
Unlike manual spreadsheets, electronic spreadsheets contain
in-built formulae called functions which help in quickly
performing numerical calculations.
Storage space is higher for saving and retrieving electronic
spreadsheets.

Advantages of electronic spreadsheet over manual
spreadsheet

Accuracy is higher for numerical computations in an electronic

spreadsheet since computer does the computations. A
computer is more capable and efficient than a calculator and
in working with manual spreadsheets, one has to do the
calculations either manually or by using a calculator.
Graphical representations of data can be generated in
electronic spreadsheet using in-built functions.
Neatness of work is guaranteed in electronic spreadsheet,
whereas in manual spreadsheet neatness depends on the
user’s handwriting skills and use of pen, pencil, eraser.

Components of a spreadsheet

Workbook - A spreadsheet program file containing one or

more worksheets.
Database - It is used to manage data entered into the cells of
a spreadsheet. In Microsoft Excel, it is found in Data tab.
Example of some database features are Sorting, Filtering,
Data Analysis, Data from Picture.
Graphs/Charts - Graphical/pictorial representations of data in
a worksheet. Example Line Graph, Pie Chart, Bar Chart,
Histogram.
