PROBLEM STATEMENT
 Are Green roofs suitable in Arid and semi-arid countries?

 Performance of green roofs in composite climate, such as

Climate in India is yet not investigated.

 Green roofs implementation on existing buildings in view of

structural mobility need to be investigated properly.

 Additionally climate and water resisting plants which are

suitable for local conditions also plays important role in the
performance and therefore needs to be investigated for
suitability.

INTRODUCTION

What is green roof?

 A roof of a building that is partially or completely
covered with vegetation planted over a waterproofing
membrane.
Importance of green roofs
Types of Green roofs
Extensive Green Roof

 Depth ranges from 3 to 6 inches

 Light in weight
 Low cost establishment
 Grass and herbs can be planted
Intensive Green Roof

 Depth 10 inches and more

 Supports trees and shrubs
 Heavier than the other two types
 Requires more maintenance
Semi-intensive Green roof

 Depth ranges from 6-10 inches

 Intermediate type
 Requires more maintenance
 Higher initial cost
 Grass, perennials and shrubs
STRUCTURE OF GREEN ROOF
Vegetation layer

 Uppermost layer

 Dictated by the depth of substrate

 Minimal input plants must be selected (Water,

Fertilizers)

 Low maintenance
GROWING MEDIA (SOIL)

 used for the classification of the green roofs

 Must be light weight
 Must have good water storage capacity
FILTER LAYER

 separates the drainage layer from the roof garden substrate

 prevents small soil particles from filling the drainage

DRAINAGE LAYER

 Helps the excess water from soil to flow to the roof drain

 Stores water in green roof

 Helps plants survive the dry weather

ROOT BARRIER LAYER

 prevent roots from breaking through roof’s

waterproof and drainage layers
 Thickness atleast 2.5mm
WATER PROOFING MEMBRANE

 Protects roof from leakage or damage

 help stop water from infiltrating foundation and
protects structure from water damage
GOAL AND OBJECTIVE
 Goal:
To propose the new model of green roof with water resisting plants and light
weight soil substrate for composite climate

 Objectives:
 To understand the performance of green roof.
 To survey the functions of different components of green roofs from
literature.
 To investigate the performance of proposed green roof.
 To select and prepare light weight moisture holding soil substrate for
green roof.
 To investigate the suitability of local plants for green roofs.
GREEN ROOF IN INDIA
CII Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, Hyderabad

The confederation of Indian Industries (CII) building is the

first LEED platinum rated building which is awarded by US
Green building council in nov 2003.
 It is built in 2003, First commercial buildings in India to
have a large green roof
 Location: Hyderabad, India

 Name: CII Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre

 Size: 4.5 acres (total site area) 1,858 m2 (total built up area)
1,115 m2 (total air-conditioned area)

 Architectural Design: Karan Grover and Associates,

India

 Type: Office building

 Type of green roof : 50 - 60% of building’s roof is

covered by extensive green roof
Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, Hyderabad
 M. Anand, senior counsellor of the Confederation of Indian Industry's
Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre says,
 “In the last years that we've been operational, we have observed
how our green roof has gradually attracted birds and bees to the urban
area”
 “Generally, heat is absorbed by roofs and reflected back into the
environment, further heating the ambient air”
 “roof effectively reduces the temperature”
 “the water used for irrigation absorbs the heat and then evaporates,
leaving both the surface and ambient air cool”
 “This has a consequential effect on the air conditioning load and
overall energy consumption”
