Practice Worksheet (October - 2023)
Subject – Chemistry
Metals and Non Metals
Name : ______________________ Date : 10/10/23
Grade : X Div : Roll No : ___________

Q. 1. Following questions consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason

(R). Answer these questions selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

1. Assertion (A) : Different metals have different reactivity with water and dilute
acids.
Reason (R) : Reactivity of metal depends upon its position in the reactivity series.

2. Assertion (A) : Iron is found in the free state in the nature.

Reason (R) : Iron is a highly reactive element.

3. Assertion (A) : Zinc oxide is amphoteric in nature.

Reason (R) : Zinc oxide reacts with both acids and bases.

4. Assertion (A) : When a piece of copper is added to dilute sulphuric acid, the
solution turns blue.
Reason (R) : Copper reacts with sulphuric acid to form Copper (II) Sulphate
solution.

Q.2. Arrange the following metals in decreasing order of reactivity are Na, K, Cu,
Ag.

Q. 3. A copper plate was dipped into a solution of silver nitrate. After some time, a
black layer was observed on the surface of copper plate. State the reason for it and
write chemical equation for the reaction involved.
Q. 4. An element reacts with oxygen to give a compound with a high melting point.
This compound is also soluble in water. Name the element.

Q. 5. A non-metal A which is the largest constituent of air, when heated with H2 in

1:3 ratio in the presence of catalyst (Fe) gives a gas B. On heating with O2 it gives an
oxide C. If this oxide is passed into water in the presence of air it gives an acid D
which acts as a strong oxidizing agent. Identify A, B, C and D.

Q. 6. a. Write the electron dot structure of calcium and sulphur.

b. Show the formation of CaS by transfer of electrons.
c. Name the ions present in the compound, CaS.
(Atomic number of Ca = 20, S = 16)

Q. 7. State the conditions under which the following metals react with water. Write
chemical equations for its reaction with each: (a) Na (b) Mg (c) Fe.

Q. 8. If a strip of aluminium with scratched clean surface is dipped into an aqueous

solution of copper sulphate for a little time, the surface of the strip becomes
brownish. What is the reason for this? Write the balanced chemical equation for
this.

Q. 9. An element ‘A’ form two oxides AO and AO2. The oxide AO is neutral whereas
the oxide AO2 is acidic in nature. Would you call element ‘A’ a metal or a non-metal?

Q. 10. What is Ionic Bond? Give properties of ionic compound.

Q. 11. Multiple choice question:

1. Which of the following can undergo a chemical reaction?
a) MgSO4 + Fe b) ZnSO4 + Fe
c) MgSO4 + Pb d) CuSO4 + Fe

2. Aqua regia is a freshly prepared mixture of concentrated HNO3 and

concentrated HCl in the ratio of:
a) 1:3, respectively b) 2:3, respectively
c) 3:1, respectively d) 3:2, respectively

3. Which of the following are not ionic compounds?

a) KCl b) HCl c) CCl4 d) NaCl
4. The metals that float when treated with water are:
a) Manganese and sodium b) Sodium and calcium
c) Magnesium and sodium d) Magnesium and calcium

Q. 12. Complete the following equation with balancing:

(i) Al + HCl →
(ii) Mg + HNO3 →

Q. 13. Read the following paragraph and answer the following.

The metals in the middle of the activity series such as iron, zinc, lead, copper, etc.,
are moderately reactive. These are usually present as sulphides or carbonates in
nature. It is easier to obtain a metal from its oxide, as compared to its sulphides
and carbonates. Therefore, prior to reduction, the metal sulphides and carbonates
must be converted into metal oxides. The sulphide ores are converted into oxides
by heating strongly in the presence of excess air. This process is known as roasting.
The carbonate ores are changed into oxides by heating strongly in limited air. This
process is known as calcination
i) What is Calcination?
ii) Give a suitable example for the process Roasting.
iii) What is the process of converting metal oxide to metal?
iv) Name some other reducing agent which can be used to extract metal from metal
oxide?
