THEORIES OF PERSONALITY

1. Briefly summarize Eriksonian research on generativity in adulthood.

Erik Erikson was a psychologist who established a theory of psychosocial

development in adulthood that incorporated the notion of generativity. Generativity is
concerned with and dedicated to leading and fostering future generations. Erikson
believed that throughout maturity, notably during middle age, people go through a
psychosocial crisis known as "Generativity vs. Stagnation. The ultimate stage of
development occurs between the ages of 60 and death. Generalized sensuality is the
psychosexual modality of old age. The conflict between integrity and despair
characterizes the psychosocial crises of old age. The conflict between integrity and
despair may result in Wisdom, allowing us to make better contributions to our
community by balancing our needs and boundaries with those of others.

2. With Erickson's psychosocial development, how does a person move from one stage
to the other? what kind of support is needed in order for the person move from one
stage to the other?

Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development outlines the various stages of

human development, each associated with a specific psychosocial crisis or challenge.
Moving from one stage to the next involves successfully resolving the crisis of the
current stage. Support throughout these stages is essential. This support can come from
family, friends, educational and social institutions, and society at large. It plays a crucial
role in helping individuals navigate the specific challenges of each stage, leading to
healthy development and a sense of well-being. Additionally, individuals can actively
engage in self-reflection and personal growth to successfully navigate these stages and
move from one to the other.
