Presenting
WALT: ORGANISE YOUR RESEARCH INTO A PRESENTATION
WILF: UNDERSTAND HOW TO RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC AND HOW TO PRESENT YOUR
IDEAS TO THE CLASS
1. Fact Find
You have chosen your topic to discuss so now you need to think
about how to organise your topic so that you create a coherent
presentation that scores highly.

Brainstorm all the different ideas that you want to discuss:

e.g., if you’re speaking about a person: who are they, what did they
do, when were they around, why were they so good etc?

e.g., if you’re speaking about a place: where is it? What kind of

place is it? What’s the weather like? Culture? Local people?

e.g., if you’re discussing a topic: think about the 5 ws and h – what,

where, when, why, who and how
2. Decide on the order of
your speech.
 Sequence the points that you want to make – what order
should your ideas be in so that they have the best
impact?
E.G.
 Introduction: where in the world my favourite place is
 Why it’s my favourite place?
 What’s there?
 What the weather is like
 The places I like to go – why I like them (3 places)
 The food
 My plans to live there one day
3. Research each point one at a time.

NEVER Try and pass a web site off as

Type key words into Google – see what your own words – rephrase, summarise
it throws up the ideas, but DON’T pretend that
they’re your words.

Collect photos of images if you want to

Look in a book for research too, or ask
at this stage. Use items to show if you
people if you’re unsure, perhaps
like, or perhaps a short video to support
someone who knows about the topic
what you’re discussing (30-60 seconds
you’ve chosen.
max)
4. Now start to write your speech
It is crucial that you have your speech written out.

Write it out as document initially and practise reading it aloud.

Remember: the characteristics of a speech should be included.

Have an introduction – good afternoon, I’d like to share with you today ….

Use DAFORREST TECHNIQUES where you can and where they feel right.

Practise reading it aloud with a stopwatch – aim for 2-5 minutes. If it’s less, you’ll be
expected to provide detailed answers to questions!!!!!
5. Once you’re happy …

 Once your speech is ready, rewrite it up

onto cue cards about A5 size.
 Easy hint: if you type your speech, this
can be done in less than 2 minutes
with cut and paste!

6. Optional extra – Powerpoint slides

Your slides should include

You DO NOT need to have DO NOT write your speech headings for sections of
slides if you don’t want to. on the screen and read it off your speech, images, short

words ONLY.
SCHEDULE FOR PRESENTATIONS
