Nix v.

Williams Argument
May it please the court. I represent Williams in the state of Iowa, that Williams’ rights were
violated and that all evidence and reason should not be admissible in court because while
agreeing to transfer Williams from Davenport to Des Moines without any questioning, Williams
was spoken to by Detective Leaming who then proceeded to influence Williams to eventually
lead them to the body of 10-year-old Pamela Powers. Police informed counsel they would
transfer Williams without questioning him.

During the transfer Leaming mentions a snowstorm and how snow covering the body of 10-
year-old Pamela Powers, seen being carried out of a YMCA by Williams, would be hard to find
for the police and Williams. He then says, “And since we will be going right past the area (where
the body is) on the way to Des Moines, I feel that we could stop and locate the body…”. As the
police car later approached Grinnell, Williams directed the officers to a point near a service
station where he said he had left the shoes of the child, they were not found. Then Williams
directed the officers to a rest area where he said he disposed of the blanket the child’s body
was wrapped in, they did not find the blanket. At this point Leaming and his party were joined
by the officers in charge of the search for Pamela. As they approached the town of Mitchellville
(where the body is) without any further questioning, Williams agreed to direct the officers to
the child’s body. The officers directing the search had called it off at 3 pm when they left the
Grinnell Police Department to meet Leaming at the rest area, although the search continued
after that. The child’s body was found near a gravel road in Polk County and Williams was
indicted for first-degree murder.
