Title: Bridge the academic ability gap in Korea

In the case of South Korea, a research of usage pattern of Internet in 2019 showed that Korea has high
Internet usage but there is a striking difference of the usage rate between the high-income households
and the low-income ones. The government has run the educational digitalization support project in order
to bridge the education gap for the information disadvantaged group and provide equal educational op-
portunities.

According to The state of school education: One year into the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand was one
of the countries which provided the largest number of ways to help distance learning for students in vul-
nerable classes. Also, as a step towards recovering the loss of learning, the government implemented the
exams to evaluate the loss of learning and tried to take action to mitigate the loss. It enables students in
New Zealand to have free access to distance learning regardless of their home environment, and they are
also provided with an educational environment to recover from their loss of learning.

It should be ensured that every country has an Internet network with enough speed for online classes to
go smoothly without any technological problems. For this, advanced countries which already succeeded
in having Internet networks should support developing countries.

In Colombia, there is an initiative A Prender la Onda (ALO) with the aim of supporting students’ learning
during the COVID-19 crisis. It was inspired and motivated due to the lack of infrastructure and connectiv-
ity for continued education; Teachers in Colombia realized that low-income students, often from rural ar-
eas, cannot afford access to the Internet but many of their students have access to community radio sta -
tions and WhatsApp. ALO designs, records, and distributes learning audio podcasts through WhatsApp,
local radio stations and other streaming platforms. It is innovative in that it is 100% led by teachers, uses
existing resources and skills, and operates beyond the geographical and institutional scope of the partici-
pating teachers.
