is transmitted to a second piston of radius 15.0 cm. If the mass of the car to be lifted is 1350 kg, calculate
F1. What is the pressure necessary to accomplish this task? (g = 9.8 ms –2 ) (3)

A square wire frame of side 10 cm is dipped in a liquid of surface tension 28 x 10–3 Nm–1. On taking out,
a membrane is formed. What is the force acting on the surface of wire frame?
11) What is excess pressure? Derive the expression for excess pressure in case of a soap bubble by using the
concept of surface energy & surface tension. (4)

At a depth of 1000 m in an ocean (i) What is the absolute pressure? (ii) What is the gauge pressure?
(iii) Find the force acting on the window of area 20 cm x 20 cm of a submarine at this depth the interior
of which is maintained at sea-level atmospheric pressure. The density of sea water is 1.03 x 103 kg m–3,
g = 10 m/s2. Atmospheric pressure = 1.01 x 105 Pa.

9) Explain the variation of pressure difference with depth. What can you conclude from this pressure

10) A capillary tube of inner diameter 0.4 mm is dipped in liquid of specific gravity 13.6, surface tension
547 x 10–3 N/m and angle of contact 135o. Find the depression or elevation of the liquid in the tube.

Anvils made of single crystals of diamond, with the shape as shown in the figure
are used to investigate behavior of materials under very high pressures. Flat
faces at the narrow end of the anvil have a diameter of 0.5 mm, and the wide
ends are subjected to a compression force of 50,000 N. What is the pressure at
the tip of the anvil?
11) State the term angle of contact. By stating capillarity phenomena, Find the height of a liquid in a

A vertical off-shore structure is built to withstand a maximum stress of 109 Pa. Is the structure suitable
for putting upon top of an oil well in the Bombay high? Take the depth of the ocean to be roughly 3 km,

10) Mercury has an angle of contact equal to 140o with soda lime glass. A narrow tube of radius 1.0 mm
made of this glass is dipped in through containing mercury. By what amount does the mercury dip
down in the tube relative to the mercury surface outside? Surface tension of mercury is 0.465 Nm –1.
Density of mercury = 13.6 x 103 kg m–3. Given {Cos (1400) = −0.7660} (3)

Figure (a) shows a thin liquid film supporting a small
weight = 4.5 10−2 N. What is the weight supported by
a film of the same liquid at the same temperature in
Figure (b) and (c)? Also calculate the surface tension
of the liquid? Explain your answer physically.
11) What is excess pressure? Derive the expression for excess pressure in case of a liquid droplet by using
the concept of surface energy & surface tension. (4)

A tank with a square base of area 1.0 m2 is divided by a vertical partition in the middle. The bottom of
the partition has a small hinged door of area 20 cm2. The tank is filled with water and an acid (of
relative density 1.7) in the other, both to a height of 4.0 m. Compute the force necessary to keep the
door closed.
