Text:

Practically all the cities in California have Spanish names, like Los Angeles, which means City of
Angels, and San Francisco, after Saint Francis of Assisi. This is because the first Europeans to
colonize California were Spanish, and California belonged to Spain, and then to Mexico, before
it became part of the United States in 1848.

San Francisco quickly became famous because gold was found there in 1848. Today it has two
of the most popular tourist attractions in the US: the Golden Gate Bridge and the Alcatraz
Prison, which closed in 1963. Now it is a museum, so if you ever go to San Francisco, you will be
able to visit it.

Los Angeles is the most populated city in California. It is in the south, and the climate is much
warmer than in San Francisco. You can swim all year round, and surf too, if you are good
enough, on the famous Malibu beach!

Hollywood is part of Los Angeles, and you can visit Universal Studios, where you can see the
sets and models and models used in Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, and many other blockbusters. The
very first Disneyland theme park, which opened in 1955, is about 50 kilometers south of Los
Angeles. The 50th anniversary celebrations started in May 2005, and lasted 18 months!
