Motivation/Introductory Activity:

Activity 1: What are they doing?


Procedures 
1. The teacher will present a picture to the students.
2. Afterward, the teacher will ask or call someone to answer what is the person doing in
the picture.
3. The teacher will encourage the students to use present progressive tense in
describing actions found in the picture.

FIRM UP
Activity 2: Encircle the progressive verb phrase
Procedures:
1. The teacher will present 5 sentences on the board.
Examples:
Zion is watching a movie right now.
Zoe was eating her favorite cake yesterday.
He will be running for president. 
They were dancing all night long.
All of them are going to the zoo.

2. The teacher will let the students identify the progressive verb phrase and explain the
structure of it.
Example:
Zion is watching a movie right now.
- The underlined phrase is the progressive tense.
- is (helping verb) + watch(main verb) + -ing
- right now is the time for expression

3. Students' prior knowledge through the motivational activities will reinforced by asking
the following questions:

Procedure:
1 The teacher will discuss the Progressive Tenses of Verbs with the students using a
slide show presentation.

Verbs in the Progressive Tenses (Past Progressive, Present Progressive, and Future
Progressive)

Let’s read and study the following sentences. Take note of the highlighted word.

1.) All students are making sandwiches.


2.) His father was driving him to the hospital.
3.) Every kid at school will be laughing at me.

What is common to all the main verbs of these verb phrases?


What is their ending suffix?

 These -ing verbs indicate ongoing actions.


 The main verbs making, driving, and laughing express continuing actions.
 They are accompanied by the auxiliary or helping verbs are, was, and will be.

2 The teacher will elaborate and explain the given sample sentences.

Verbs in the progressive tenses may be differentiated according to form and use. They may
express continuing actions or conditions in the past, present, and future. Auxiliary or helping
verbs allow us to use verbs in any progressive tense.

All the students are making sandwiches.


[Auxiliary verb are + ing form of the main make]

His father was driving him to the hospital.


[Auxiliary verb was + ing form of the main drive]

Every kid at the school will be laughing at me.

Present Progressive Tense


 A verb in the present progressive tense expresses an action happening at the time of
speaking
 It is used in -ing form and with the auxiliary or helping verbs am, is, and are.
 Some time expressions used are right now, now, at this moment, or at this time.

Examples:
1. The children are playing tennis right now.
2. Leigh is reading the story Cinderella at this moment.
3. She is washing the dishes now.
4. I am eating chicken right now.

 The present progressive tense is also used to show a future action.

Examples:
1. We are leaving for Baguio on Friday.
2. The school is planning to have a basketball league this summer.

4 The teacher will discuss and elaborate on the past progressive tense.

Past Progressive Tense


 A verb in the past progressive tense shows an action in progress for a certain period
of time in the past.
 It is in -ing form and used with the auxiliary or helping verbs was and were.
 The usual time expressions used are yesterday, last weekend, or a while ago.

Examples:
1. The dog was eating a new dish a while ago.
2. I was singing your favorite song yesterday.
3. She was baking a cake last night.
4. They were painting the fence last weekend.

 The past progressive tense also shows an ongoing action at a time when another
past action happens.

Examples:
1. Lance was practicing his guitar lessons when Ralph knocked on the door.
2. We were visiting Vigan when we met Lester.

5 The teacher will discuss and elaborate on the future progressive tense.

Future Progressive Tense


 A verb in the future progressive tense shows a future action in progress at a certain
period of time in the future.
 It is in -ing form and is used with the auxiliary or helping verb will be and shall be.
 The commonly used time expressions are next summer, by tomorrow, or any
expression indicating the future time.

Examples:
1. The Santos family will be going to Rizal Park this weekend.
2. We shall be asking questions about the trip afterward.
3. I shall be seeing you this time next week.
4. She will be studying tonight.

2) The teacher will divide the class into two groups and will assign two topics: love or career
and passion or career.
3) The students will create a short story with the use of progressive tenses of verbs for 20
minutes.
4) The students will share their short story in front and the teacher will discuss as a class
which progressive tenses were used and why they were appropriate for the context of the
story.
5) The teacher will encourage students to ask questions about the use of specific tenses in
the stories presented.

the use of progressive tenses in storytelling, students can gain a nuanced grasp of how verb

storytelling abilities.

Reinforcing the Day’s Lesson:


In order to know if the students understood and learned the lesson, the teacher will ask students to write a reflective journal about what they learned in the lesson.

Directions: Write a reflective Journal about what you have learned in Progressive Tenses of the Verbs in a short bond paper.

Enhancing the Day’s Lesson:


ASSIGNMENT The teacher will encourage the students to ask questions about the topic. The teacher will have an open discussion to clarify doubts and correct misconceptions.
