Model
A Group Presentation of BSTM 2-1
Introduction
WHAT?
The Jafari’s ‘Platform’ Model
WHO? WHEN?
PROF. JAFAR JAFARI. 1990
WHY?
To introduce the framework of
attitudes towards tourism
development and impacts...
The model provides a useful
framework for understanding the
emergence and development of
sustainable tourism in particular.
The 4 Platforms in the
Jafari’s ‘Platform’ Model
1. Advocacy Platform
2. Cautionary Platform
3. Adaptancy Platform
4. Knowledge-based platform

These platforms emphasize different perspectives and how

tourism is perceived as well as towards how tourism creates
impacts, both in negative and positive dimension.
1. Advocacy Platform
it was emerged in 1950 to 1960
this platform focuses on the benefits of tourism
industry such as economic revenue, employment
opportunities and development of the industry.
2. Cautionary Platform
Views tourism as a bad Proposed that tourism would Studies that argued tourism

3. Adaptancy Platform
This platform suggests adaptions or alternative modes of
tourism activities that are positive to host communities.

aka “Alternative Tourism” -- alternative to mass or

conventional tourism.

EXAMPLE:
Hiking, Camping, Visiting National or Protected Area
4. Knowledge-based
Platform
-- is a fundamental approach that offers a
comprehensive view of the tourism industry. It
emphasizes informed decision-making, sustainability,
and the integration of valuable experiences to enhance
tourism management.

Holistic View and Its Significance Lessons Learned and Application Application of Knowledge

* Understanding the Tourism * Impact of Uncontrolled Planning * Sustainability Frameworks

Industry * Role of Alternative Tourism * Adaptive Strategies
* Sustainable Tourism
* Sustainable Tourism Practices * Collaborative Learning
* Global Engagement
The Knowledge-Based Platform provides a valuable lens through which
stakeholders in the tourism industry can navigate the complexities of
modern tourism. By learning from past experiences and staying informed
about global trends, stakeholders can contribute to a more sustainable,
responsible, and balanced tourism sector that benefits both local
communities and the environment in the long run.
Summary
From the first to the last platform, it can be
seen that stakeholders in the tourism industry
have experienced both positive and negative
effects occurred in the system of tourism
activities, have learned, adapted and sought
balanced ways to apply in tourism development
and management to minimize negative impacts
and to maximize positive impacts.

Rather small and larger- scaled tourism can be

promoted with a balance, with high concern of
environmental, cultural and economic security.
