Course Description
Differential Calculus of functions of several variable: Review of Limit, continuity (sequential
verification) and differentiability, Partial differentiation; Total differentiation; Euler’s theorem and
generalization; Change of variables- Jacobians; Maxima and minima of functions of several
variables (2 and 3 variables); Lagrange’s method of multipliers.

Integral Calculus: Convergence of improper integrals; Beta and Gamma integrals;

Differentiation under integral sign; Double and Triple integrals - computation of surface areas
and volumes; change of variables in double and triple integrals.

Vector Calculus: Scalar and vector fields; vector differentiation; level surfaces; directional
derivative; gradient of a scalar field; divergence and curl of a vector field; Laplacian; Line and
Surface integrals; Green’s theorem in a plane; Stokes’ theorem; Gauss Divergence theorem.

Scope

➢ To provide good fundamental concepts in Differential and Integral Calculus.

➢ To inculcate the ideas to understand the base of engineering problems and accordingly
applying suitable methods.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the students will be able to

➢ understand the concepts of limit, continuity and differentiablility
➢ understand the concepts of partial derivative, chain rule and total differentiation
➢ find the maxima and minima of multivariable functions
➢ analyze improper integrals and evaluate multiple integrals in various coordinate systems
➢ apply the concepts of gradient, divergence and curl to formulate engineering problems
➢ convert line integrals into area integrals and surface integrals into volume integrals
