WORDED PROBLEMS
Instructions: Do any four (4) questions; show all working in the answer booklet provided
(15 marks each).

1. (a) Mr. Johnson invested a certain amount of money at 12.5% interest rate per annum and
$25,000 more than that amount at 20% interest rate. His total yearly interest earned was
$6,950.00. How much did he invest at each interest rate?
(b) The cube of a number equals nine times the same number. Find the number.

2. The combined area of a square and a rectangle is 64 square centimeters. The width of the
rectangle is 2 centimeters more than the length of a side of the square, and the length of the
rectangle is 2 centimeters more than its width.
(a) Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
(b) Find the dimensions of the square.
(c) Determine the difference between the perimeter of the rectangle and the square

3. (a) Nigel can do a certain job in 3 hours, where as it takes Tamara 4 hours to do the same job.
How long would it take them to do the same job if they are working together?

(b) Joseph ordered two cameras and three batteries for $900. At the same price Rohan bought
four cameras and one battery for $1050. Determine the price per camera and the price per
battery?

4. (a) Find three consecutive odd integers such that the sum of all three is 36 less than the
product of the smaller two.
(b) A 10-gallon container is full and contains a 40% solution of antifreeze. How much needs
to be drained out and replaced with pure antifreeze to obtain a 70% solution?

5. If A and B are two points on a plane with coordinates of (6, -4) and (-18, 8) respectively:-
(a) What is the equation (in slope-intercept form) of the line determined by these two points?
(b) What is the distance between points A and B?
