MID-TERM

Contemporary Art - is the art of the present, produced by living artists in the twenty-first century. It is art that provides
an opportunity to reflect on today’s social issuesrelevant to humanity, and the world around us.

Contemporary Art Forms - The traditional subdivision of Arts, being Architecture,Sculpture, Painting, Literature,
Music, Performing, and Film.

Modern art - Includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and
denotes the styles and philosophy of the art produced during that era.

Architecture - the art and science of designing buildings and (some) nonbuilding structures. It is also the style of
design and method of construction of buildings and other physical structures.

Film - a motion picture made primarily for aesthetic reasons rather than commercial profit, often of an experimental
nature or having an unconventional or highly symbolic content, aimed typically at a limited audience.

Literature - refers to writing; considered to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual
value, and sometimes deploys language in ways that differ from ordinary usage.

Music - art concerned with combining vocal or instrumental sounds for beauty of form or emotional expression,
usually according to cultural standards of rhythm, melody, and, in most Western music, harmony.

Painting - is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or
"support").

Performing Arts - Performing arts refers to forms of art in which artists use their voices, bodies or inanimate objects to
convey artistic expression. It is different from visual arts, which is when artists use paint, canvas or various materials
to create physical or static art objects.

Sculpture - an artistic form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-dimensional art objects. in reliefs
on surfaces, or in environments ranging from images to contexts that envelop the spectator.

Contemporary Philippine Painting - aims to provide students with an appreciation of a broad range of styles in the
various disciplines with consideration on their elements and principles, and engage them to an integrative approach
in
studying arts.

Contemporary Architecture - the architecture of the 21st century. No single style is dominant; contemporary architects
are working in several different styles, from postmodernism and high-tech architecture to highly conceptual and
expressive forms and designs, resembling sculpture on an enormous scale. and reinforced concrete.

Contemporary Sculpture - a form of art which creates 3 dimensional artwork achieved by shaping certain materials.
Modern and contemporary sculpture involves techniques developed over time as well as elements of popular culture.
Contemporary Music - in the Philippines it usually refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from
twentieth century art music in the West, as well as the latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry.

Contemporary Literature - is defined as literature written after World War II through the current day. The horrors of the
war, including bombs, ground wars, genocide and corruption, are the pathways to this type of literature.
Contemporary Film - film that is produced today by artists are living in the 21 st century. Contemporary art in film
generally gives us the opportunity to reflect on our society and issues relevant to ourselves and the world around us.

Contemporary Performance Arts - artworks that are created through actions performed by the artist or other
participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted; are hybrid performance works and artists that
travel between the fields of experimental theatre & dance, video art, visual art, music composition and performance
art without adhering to one specific field's practice.

Realism is a painting art style that aims to give the viewer a reflection of the real world.

You may also see photorealism referred to as hyperrealism or super-realism. This painting style aims to create a
painting that’s indistinguishable from real life or a photograph – hence the name.

Expressionism is a style of art that doesn’t concern itself with realism, images and scenes are often distorted or
painted with otherworldly, vivid colours that don’t match up with reality.

Impressionism is a painting style most commonly associated with the 19th century where small brush strokes are
used to build up a larger picture.

Abstract paintings avoid realism altogether. Whatever the subject in the painting, it may not be accurately
represented at all in the artwork. Objects may be represented by a colour or a shape instead, with the interpretation
left up to the viewer.

Surrealism first became a movement in the 20th century, with artists such as Salvador Dali becoming household
names.

Pop art became a movement that drew inspiration from the commodification and commercialism of modern life.

Oil paintings are one of the oldest forms of painting and remain one of the most popular painting medium types to this
day.

Watercolour paints tend to be inexpensive to purchase but, similar to oil paints, difficult to master.

Acrylic is a relatively new painting medium. It dries quickly, is versatile, and can be very durable.

Pastels. Most pastels come in the form of a stick of powdered pigment which is then pressed onto the canvas to
apply the colour, with several different varieties available.

Encaustic Painting is an ancient method of infusing colour into a surface, usually wood, canvas, or even tile.

Frescoes are traditionally a quite large-scale painting medium, as they are usually applied over a layer of freshly laid
lime plaster.
Spray paint, or aerosol paint, is a modern form of painting and has become associated with street art or graffiti.

Digital Format. Using digital painting tools which include virtual brushes of different sizes and textures as well as a
range of colours that would be difficult to procure in reality, digital artists are able to create paintings that can push the
boundaries of their imagination.

History Painting
These focus on a representation of a particular historical, religious, or allegorical event. As such, a moral message is
usually a key component of the painting in question.

Portrait art uses people as its subjects. The most commonly known type of portrait art focuses on a single person, but
group or self-portraits are also classified under this type of painting subject.

A GENRE painting has an everyday scene as its subject. This differs from landscape painting as in genre painting it
is the representation of life itself which is the subject.

Landscape paintings are one of the most popular and enduring types of subject, focusing on a natural scene.

A STILL LIFE PAINITNG looks at everyday or domestic objects and aims to accurately represent them.
