The importance of cultural diversity in the selection of children’s literature and the
value of exposing young children to multicultural literature in South Africa

Cultural diversity is the existing variety of cultural groups within a society. It is also showing
appreciation toward the multiple differential groups with different skills, interests, talents and
needs included in the societal system.

A study by Drexel University concludes that, “ [S]tudents who learn about different cultures
during their education feel more comfortable with these differences in life”. It is proven,
according to a conducted survey, that these students who have been taught about cultural
differences are more likely to form a wider range of social groups which is inclusive of all
ethnic and racial groups regardless of their appearance or other cultural discriminatory
stereotypes. Drexel University also states that it boosts self confidence as well as their
confidence level during social interactions.

It is essential to teach children about the diverse cultures we find in South Africa. South
Africa is a country of diverse nature by default. There are many traditions and cultural events
held that learners need to understand. South Africa also has a very deep and enriched
history which adds it multi-cultural recognition. Encouraging learners to accept and respect
the different cultures in society, is a great way to break any past regimes regarding cultural
or ethnical differences. Building on a child’s knowledge about cultural diversity, integrating
the theme into their schoolwork and teaching them how to identify it in their daily lives
improves their self confidence at a young age and enhances their skills. It increases their
awareness of the variety of cultures and teaches them how to be appreciative of it.

In conclusion, guiding children in their exploration and discovery of cultural diversity, is

advantageous to their academic abilities and their adaptations to diverse culture and beliefs.
