Choose three to answer.

1. Why isn't race a biological category? Offer examples from this week's material, in your own
words, to illustrate and defend your points. 2 pts.

Race is not considered a biological category because it is a social construct based on the physical
differences people see. In the unit 5 lecture slides it stated that race is not a biological category.
Race drives political and social outcomes even though it isn’t real. The reason why we say it is
not real is because you can not measure someone’s race. The way that society determines
someone’s race would be based on the way they look. Race has always been an ideology and
racial ideologies create material realities

2. Compare and contrast the ideas of race and ethnicity. Offer examples from this week's
material, in your own words, to illustrate and defend your points. 2 pts.

When we think about race and ethnicity, we might think that they are similar or the same but in
reality, race is a socially defined category based on real or perceived biological differences and
ethnicity Is a socially defined category based on language, religion, nationality, history and other
cultural factors.

3. What is Colorism and what role does white skin privilege play in Latin America? Offer
examples from this week's material, in your own words, to illustrate and defend your points. 2
pts.

According to the lecture colorism is defined as “prejudicial or preferential treatment of the same
race people based solely on the color of their skin.” White skin privilege in Latin America plays a
big role in many ways. For example, white supremacy is taught all over Latin America we grow up
with nicknames such as “Guero” “guerita” or “negro”. These nicknames might not seem to cause
much harm as kids because we don’t realize the way colorism is included in our culture.
