POS 357—Film & Politics

Weekly Reflection Assignment # 1: Instructions & Prompt
Instructions/Due Date:
After watching the lectures and film for this week, collect your thoughts. Write a 500-word response to
one of the prompts below. Consult the “General Guidelines and Rubric” document for the full
expectations associated with this ongoing, weekly assignment.

Submission:
You should submit your response via the submission tab as an attachment in one of the following
formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf.

Prompts:
1) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was produced in 1939. Do you feel that the film is still relevant and
applicable to contemporary American life? Why or why not?

2) This week, we focused quite a bit on the artistic choices made and cinematic techniques by a director
and how they are generally done intentionally. What is one particularly compelling choice/technique
employed by filmmaker Frank Capra? What is he trying to achieve in making this artistic choice and do
you think he succeeds?

Remember:
Every weekly assignment you write must have the following three components.
• At least one direct reference to the text (with proper citation in APA format).
• At least one direct reference to that week’s lecture modules.
• At least one reference to a point or idea raised in the film (with proper citation in APA
format).

The goal here is to integrate the different components of the course and draw connections between them
in your writing. If you fail to include these components, you will lose significant points on that week’s
submission, regardless of how well it is written or how compelling your argument.
