Application G3600 and G3500C gas engines with Cat ADEM III control

Description A plug-in PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) module has

been developed to help bridge data communications between the
Cat ADEM III control on the G3600 engine and a PLC-based
external control panel. This device is a custom-developed
application of the 1756-MVI (Multi-Vendor Interface) interface
module, a multi-purpose adaptor card for use with the Allen
Bradley ControlLogix PLC. It is configured to serve as a
translator for the M5X protocol output from the Caterpillar®
Customer Communications Module (CCM), the required
input/output interface for the data stream available with the
ADEM III control on the G3600 and G3500C engine.

Features/Benefits The MVI card is a plug-in device for the ControlLogix PLC that
decodes the M5X data stream from the Cat® CCM, making the
scaled data available in the PLC environment. The customer need
only map the data to their desired location in an access table for
use by their system. In addition to the engine operating data, the
ADEM III fault codes and diagnostic/event data returned by the
CCM are also available for viewing in the PLC via the MVI
translator.

Details Regarding the MVI Protocol Translator:

• Scaled Data - The MVI returns scaled data. The user has only to map the data to the proper
location.
• FID Data - The MVI returns and flags FID (Fault Indentifier) codes from the CCM. The user
does not need to test to determine if data are valid or if fault identifiers are from within the ladder
program.
• RUD Data - The MVI returns RUD (Recently Updated Data) status, eliminating questions as to
whether data returned from the CCM are “stale” or simply valid steady state data.
• Composite Data - Diagnostic and Event Composite Data can be accessed through the CCM (part
number 188-3080 only).
• Application Echo - The Application Echo verifies that the MVI application is up and running,
confirming the integrity of communications along the backplane of the controller chassis.
• The MVI inserts directly into an Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLC chassis. The ControlLogix
platform can be used to bridge different network protocols such as Ethernet IP, Modbus, Modbus
Plus, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, Devicenet, Controlnet, Data Highway Remote IO, DH+
