This document provides information about the MAT 4240 Complex Analysis II course. The course builds upon concepts from Complex Analysis I and focuses on calculus of residues and its application to evaluating integrals. Students will learn about conformal mapping, the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation, and their applications. By the end of the course, students should be able to evaluate difficult real integrals using contour integrals, study convergence of infinite products and potential theory in fluid dynamics. Assessment will consist of coursework and an examination.

Purpose To expose the learner to calculus of residues and its application in the evaluation of integrals: both the conformal mapping and the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation and their applications Expected Learning outcomes By the end of the course, the student should be able: i. Explain the conditions, under which a complex function is conformed. ii. Determine a complex function that would transform a given figure in the Z-plane to a given figure in the w-plane. iii. Evaluate difficulty real integrals by converting them to contour integrals. iv. Estimate the divergences and convergences of infinite products of complex numbers. v. Study potential theory in fluid dynamics with ease. Course content Residues, evaluation of integrals, conformal mapping and its application, the Swartz- Christoffel transformation, uniform convergence and infinite products, analytic continuation, uniqueness and the principle of reflection. Course Assessment The course will be assessed in two parts: • Coursework (continuous assessment tests) which shall constitute 30% of the total mark • Examination shall constitute 70% of the total mark Core reading material 1.James Ward Brown & Ruel V.
