Experiment No. 7

Subject: Elements of Machine Design [22564] Date: 24-09-2023

Name of Staff: Mr. S. L. Deshmukh Class: ME 5I
Topic- Design of Shafts

1) Distinguish between shaft and axle.

2) State the reasons for using hollow shaft rather than solid shaft for large power transmission.
3) Write short note on ASME code for design of shaft subjected to fluctuating load.
4) Compare the weight, strength and stiffness of a hollow shaft of the same external diameter as
that of a solid shaft. The inside diameter of the hollow shaft is half the external diameter. Both
the shafts have the same material and length.
5) A hollow shaft is to be designed to transmit 600 kW at 110 rpm. The maximum torque being
20% greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 63 MPa and angle of twist in a
length of 3 mtrs not to exceed 1.4 degree. Find external diameter of the shaft if the internal
diameter to external diameter is 3/8. Take modulus of rigidity 84 GPa.
6) Find inside and outside diameter of a hollow shaft to transmit 20 KW at 200 rpm. Given
ultimate shear stress=360Mpa. F.O.S.=8 and K=0.5.
7) Design a shaft transmitting power of 60 KW at 600 rpm as shown in Fig. The shaft is hollow
having ratio of inner to outer diameter 0.5. The shaft carries pulley ‘C’ as shown. The angle of
contact between belt and pulley is 180°. The belts are vertical as shown. The diameter and
weight of pulley are 250 mm and 700 N respectively and the ratio of tight-side to slack side
tension is 3. Take Km = 2, Kt = 1.5. Design shaft if shear stress in material is not to exceed 52
N/mm2.

8) A lathe receives power from an overhung shaft situated exactly above the lathe pulley by
means of the belt drive. A pulley weighing 400 N and of diameter 270 mm is fixed on the shaft
at a distance of 300 mm to the right of the left hand bearing. The centre to centre distance
between the two shaft supporting bearings is 900 mm. The maximum power required by machine
is 5 kW at 200 rpm. The belt tension ratio is 2.5. Determine the diameter of shaft.
Allowable shear stress for shaft material is 40 N/mm2.
Q. 4) Compare the weight, strength and stiffness of a hollow shaft of the same external diameter
as that of a solid shaft. The inside diameter of the hollow shaft is half the external diameter. Both
the shafts have the same material and length.
